| The Corn Maze in The Plains |
Picked as one of the top corn maze attractions in the Mid-Atlantic, The Corn Maze in The Plains returns for its ninth Year this weekend, and is open through the first week of November.
Not only is the maze organic, the large interactive maze design changes
every year, and attracts thousands of visitors from all over the area. Over the last nine years the maze has become a
family fall tradition of the greater D.C. area for fall fun, pumpkin picking,
and agritainment.
New this year is a giant 5-acre
maze called “Our Amaizing Earth." Since 2000 the maze operators have
run their event as Green as possible, and this
year they decided to honor this way of life, by featuring “Our Amazing Earth” as the maze theme.
Why do thousands of people flock to corn mazes? A visit to the one in The Plains might provide an answer. It is one
of the premier, homegrown corn mazes in the country, a fun fall event, full of
adventure and it is a natural choice away from hectic city life.
The corn field comes alive when it is filled with
maze goers who enter the 2.5 miles of “cornfusing” pathways. They soon find
themselves facing countless choices, while attempting to answer the trivia clues
en route to the elusive victory bridge. Whether it is during the night or day,
each maze wanderer is armed with a survival guide and flag, on a mission to
collect puzzle pieces of the maze design and test their trivia skills to help
them find their way out. If one gets
“udderly cornfused”, they can always wave their teams flag frantically,
to signal the “corn cop” to come to their rescue.
The maze is the work of husband-wife team Kate and
Hub Knott, who have seen their maze grow from a small event to one of the region's most
popular. “Dedication, hard work, and
vision are what make this possible," said Kate Knott, a local
farmer. "We listen to our customers, and
every year we just keep getting better because of it. We are praised for our colorful, hand-made,
non-commercial farm event filled with farm animals, educational
displays, kid’s activities and great organic burgers from local farms. We have always been 'green' because that is
the lifestyle that makes sense, and therefore there was no question of doing business any other
way. The maze is the main feature, and
will easily challenge a group for an hour.
The rest of the farm activities can fill several hours of fun”.
Due to popular
demand are more night time maze dates because wandering through the corn at
night with a flash light is just too fun to pass up. Imagine walking through the rustling corn in
the dark, hearing laughter all around, kids, adults, cool fall breeze, moon
glowing over head, and no idea of where to go next, while a bonfire awaits your
exit. For about the same price as a
movie, you can spend hours with family and friends making the best of your fall
while supporting Virginia farms.
In addition to the
corn maze, there is an entire Barnyard of fun for kids of all ages (and adults
too!), including farm animals, giant slides, mini-mazes, rope mazes, giant hay
bale obstacle course, and more. The
barnyard is filled with farm education to add learning to the fun. Hear the rooster crow…..throw some hay…..pick
a pumpkin!
Set in Virginia’s beautiful
rolling hunt country, our farm is the perfect place to take a hayride with distant views of
Shenandoah
National park and the
changing fall colors. There is food, so
feast your taste buds on
locally-raised organic beef burgers, our famous Roasted Sweet Corn, apple cider and kettle
corn. Visit the country store to choose
from thousands upon thousands of local pumpkins, apples, Virginia honey, our
famous and best-seller Pumpkin Pie Fudge, apple butter and preserves, old-time Appalachian
crafts and more. "We are told we have
the best pumpkins in Virginia," said Kate Knott.
In addition to the thousands of weekend visitors, The
Corn Maze in The Plains is a perfect place for birthdays and private parties,
company picnics and school field trips with group discounts available.
The Corn Maze in The Plains will open
September 20 and run through November 2 from 10am to 6 pm, and some select nights. Open Saturdays and Sundays,
plus Fridays in October and Columbus Day.
The event is located in the heart of Virginia’s horse country in the town of
The Plains,
Virginia. The maze is located at the
intersection of I-66 and Route 245
(Exit 31), midway to
Shenandoah
National Park.
