Arts Alexandria Virginia
Friday, 19 September 2008, 6:30-9:00pm Principle Gallery, 208 King Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22314 703.739.9326, www.principlegallery.com, info@principlegallery.com
Trompe l'oeil is French for "trick the eye," a phrase that was coined around 1800 to describe the paintings of Louis-Leopold Boilly at the Paris Salon.
In its strictest definition, trompe l'oeil painting is the art of illusion. Life-size objects on the painting's surface appear to project out from the picture plane. The trompe l’oeil artist strives to create illusion by taking a three-dimensional object, capturing it on a two-dimensional surface, and then making it appear three-dimensional again. The painted objects are so meticulously detailed and life-like that virtually no brush strokes show – so deliberate and precise is the execution of the illusion.
‘Trompe L’oeil’, the exhibition, features the work of three exceptional artists, Jorge Alberto, Joshua Suda, and Adam Vinson. While the exhibition is cohesive and contemporary in feel, the style and subject matter of the artists are distinctly different; each artist is unique in his approach and rendering of the respective illusion.
This exhibit will begin with a reception open to the public on Friday, 19 September 2008 from 6:30pm-9:00pm. The artists will be in attendance to meet with collectors and discuss the inspiration for their paintings. All paintings on display will be available for purchase.
