Mention polo and chances are you envision the iconic style logo of an embroidered figure atop a horse mallet in hand made famous by Ralph Lauren. Polo is synonymous with fashion and is a local passion with plenty of opportunities to party.

On the social scene, equestrian events bring together beautiful horses and beautiful people outdoors in the picturesque venues unique to VA, MD, and DC for sports, cocktails, and of course fashion.  Now, with the upcoming the Land Rover’s America’s Polo Cup, we can add patriotism.

The USA and Australia will compete for top honors and you won’t want to miss it. Patroned by each sitting President and hosted this year by Capitol Polo club in Potomac, this international event is sure to draw dignitaries galore on May 8 and 9.

At the kickoff weekend this fall, corporate sponsors including Cartier and The Ritz Carlton in Pentagon City treated guests to a perfectly sunny day on the National Mall to watch a match set against the backdrop of the Washington Monument. With Australian wines and substantially delectable “prawns on the barbie,” the elegant spread satisfied sophisticated palates.

Attention American Idol fans, Michael John’s crooned the Australian National Anthem and mingled with reality TV lovers and polo crowd. If you love idol, you won’t want to miss his performance in May at the Battle of the Coral Sea Gala and onstage again following the trophy presentation after the headlining match.

Next up in the America’s Cup pre-party circuit is a wine and beer tasting to ring in Halloween at the Embassy of Australia.

In addition to the already enticing lure of polo chic fashion, a Rockin’ the Runway televised fashion show is in the works as part of the gala. Black tie optional, fun and fabulous required. Did we mention the hat contest for Cartier gift certificates?

A mystery international superstar mega performance at 8 o’clock hour could be the showstopper in this action packed weekend. Party the night away after the fireworks on the field.

If you missed the fantastic kick off match on the National Mall, there is plenty of time to get excited about the main event May 8-9. Make your plans for an unforgettable weekend of polo, music and fashion and cheer on the home team. Rest up and come ready to party.
