Indigo Landing – From Charleston Cuisine to a Grille House

To be honest, I have not been to Indigo Landing for a while because of the limited menu. Chef Bryan Moscatello’s Low-country cuisine was too limited for my taste. Other than their stellar bread basket with its addictive bacon crackers, sea-salt rolls, and jalapeno corn muffins, it was hard to please everybody with menu items such as the tender pork belly with crunchy pickled watermelon on rind.

Indigo Landing - Located next to the Washington Sailing Marina - Daingerfield in Alexandria

This Sunday (May 4th), the weather was great and we wanted to be outdoors. Honestly, you cannot beat indigo Landing when it comes to outdoor appeal. With the beautiful view of Washington DC, the planes landing at Reagan Airport, and the grassy lawn overlooking the sailing Marina, It is a wonderful spot to relax or have a chilled summer drink. It is also a great spot to take the kids since they can play in the grassy lawn area while the adults can enjoy a quiet dinner (they also have a great kid’s friendly menu).

After being seated, I looked at the menu and to my pleasant surprise, it was completely different. A new chef is in the house. Chef Ernesto Pablico has changed things around, with a focus on grilled seafood and meat. The menu is fun to choose from even for a vegetarian, with choices such as the Mediterranean Sliders served on mini pita with tzatziki spread, fresh basil, hummus, roma tomato and daikon sprouts.

The service is a hit or miss; we found it hard to order our drinks and got them back twenty minutes later. We ordered fried calamari for an appetizer and got a plate that looked like somebody else’s leftovers (about 10 calamari pieces). The calamari was over breaded and mostly tentacles. That was a big disappointment. The beef sliders were good but we had to return the blue crab sliders because they did not taste right. The menu concept is great but the chef needs to fine tune some of the items and be a little generous with the portions for some of the appetizers.

Even with all that, we still had a great time. Indigo Landing has a lot to offer from a great patio and view, pretty décor and an awesome bar to a great menu. It is probably the best waterfront dining spot in Alexandria.
