Crystal City Movie Festival

After much anticipation and excitement, the Crystal City Business Improvement District announced last night that SUPERHEROES will be the theme of the 2009 Crystal Screen Outdoor Summer Film Festival.  Nearing the close of this year’s From Crystal City with Love, the area's only free outdoor film festival featuring all 21 official James Bond movies, much buzz had been generated about what films would be featured next summer.  Currently running a season extension of four whacky 007 Spoofs, last night’s crowd cheered upon learning the SUPERHEROES plan.

The Third Annual Crystal Screen, showcasing 21-weeks of heroes, villains, and super powers, will kick-off in early May with the Spiderman trilogy followed by movies featuring the Hulk, Superman, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, culminating with all of the Batman movies, including this summer’s blockbuster hit, Batman: The Dark Knight.

“This summer’s series was a smashing success with large crowds, great partnerships, a bigger screen, an even more powerful sound system, and a fun four-week extension,” said Angela Fox, President/CEO of the Crystal City BID. “Naturally, we had to follow this year’s spy extravaganza with a super-powered response, and Crystal Screen: Superheroes is sure to be a hit for all ages!”

The announcement was made at the showing of the 1967 version of Casino Royale, the first of four movies that make up the 2008 Crystal Screen extension featuring James Bond spoof movies.  All three movies in the Austin Powers Series – Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, and Austin Powers in Goldmember
are also included.

Crystal Screen regularly attracts hundreds of visitors throughout the metropolitan area.  The festival is shown in one of Crystal City’s many green spaces, owned, managed, and donated for the festival by Vornado/Charles E. Smith.  Convenient to Metro and Crystal City’s many restaurants, Crystal Screen offers the perfect opportunity for a leisurely and affordable night out for dinner and a movie – whether a take-out picnic on the grass or a traditional sit-down dinner.

Film Festival Details:
Location: Courtyard along S. Bell Street between 18th and 20th Streets – diagonal to the Crystal City Metro Station
Parking: Free garage parking available at designated Crystal City garages after 4:00PM
Metro: Take the Yellow or Blue Line to Crystal City
