Creative Movement for Preschoolers

When I move to Alexandria VA from NYC I was shocked to find how little creative movement there was in the area – the whole DC Metro area. I came from a place where it was not only offered at dance studios, but in preschools and daycares.  As a parent of two boys, I was more limited in my choices, as many of the programs focused on fairy tales, princesses, and tutus. My 3-year-old son would most likely enjoy these tremendously, but that is beside the point. I was looking for something different. When I did not find it, I dusted off my tapes (yes tapes) and told Ann Bartlett of Body In Balance Center that I wanted to begin teaching again.

The preschool set has so much offered to them by way of activities, all promising one thing or another, it is hard to figure out what is best, or further more, what they would like. I can tell you from years of experience both teaching and now taking my son, that creative movement comes out as one of the top contenders for favorite weekly activity.

Creative movement is a form of movement that embraces children of all genders, ages and abilities, including those with developmental challenges. It is a non-competitive, success-oriented activity that engages the child’s body, mind and spirit. Format of classes and activities will differ from teacher to teacher, depending on style and background, but you can be sure that music will play a large part, as will props such as scarves or ribbon sticks, and there will be a deep focus on communicating and articulating ideas through movement.

  • In creative movement classes children:
  • Explore music through movement
  • Have a positive outlet for energy
  • Learn about their bodies in space and in relation to others
  • Strengthen listening skills
  • Foster an appreciation for the arts
  • Increase self- esteem
  • Deepen sensory awareness
  • Work on problem solving skills
  • Practice self-control

These are just a few of the benefits of creative movement. The others benefits, well, you witness those yourselves!
