| Will Gunn |
The Alexandria Black History Museum’s annual Veterans Day program will be held on Tuesday, November 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year’s honored guest and featured speaker will be Will Gunn, a retired Air Force colonel and Harvard-educated attorney, who now practices law in Alexandria. Gunn will discuss “Making a Difference While Making History: Looking Back and Charting a Path for the Future.”
After serving more than two decades in the Air Force, Gunn gained national prominence in 2003 when he was named Chief Defense Counsel for the Department of Defense’s Office of Military Commissions. In that capacity, Gunn oversaw the defense efforts for hundreds of detainees facing military commissions at Guantanamo Bay.
Gunn first began his military career as a cadet at the Air Force Academy where he graduated with military honors. He later attended Harvard Law School through the Air Force Funded Legal Education Program and graduated with academic honors. Prior to his assignment as Chief Defense Counsel, Gunn had served as Executive Officer to the Air Force Judge Advocate General (JAG) and earlier as Chief Circuit Defense Counsel for the Air Force Central Circuit. He retired from the Air Force in 2005 and went on to serve as president and CEO of Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington.
This free event will also include a live performance of the National Anthem and light refreshments. The event is co-sponsored by the Alexandria Branch of the NAACP, Alexandria Society for the Preservation of Black Heritage, and Alexandria Black History Museum. Due to limited seating, reservations are requested but not required. Please call 703.838.4356 for reservations or more information.
The Alexandria Black History Museum, located in the heart of Alexandria’s historic Parker-Gray District, is open from Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, please visit www.alexblackhistory.org.
