Dear Merrily,

I want to start a new career. In order to do this, I need a lot of time and energy for writing and thinking and being creative. My problem is that I've allowed my daughter to take up all my time and most of my energy. She'll be a senior in the Fall and with college applications and driving her everywhere etc. I fear there will be no time left for me let alone time to create a new career.

Dear New Career,

You are wise to see that you have allowed your daughter to take up all your time and most of your energy.

Now you either have a problem or an intention. Choose.

Do you want the new career passionately enough to create your own sacred time and space?   Weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. I am in my office not to be disturbed.

‘I fear there will be no time left for me.’  You are right.  Time is like money.  At the end of the month there is no money left for savings. Time must also be set aside first.

Read Stephen Covey’s Time Management Matrix in 7 Habits. . . .

At a family meeting present your intention in a firm and loving manner.  Tell the family what you want to create and what you need to do it.  Make your boundaries very clear.

While they will respect what you are doing, there will be ruffled feathers.  You will have to accept that as they adjust to your plan and begin taking more personal responsibility.

You could wait another year until your daughter is in college.  But, you sound ready to begin now.

What a good example you would set for your daughter in creating a wholesome balance between mom’s needs and family needs.
