George Washington does the minuet at Gadsby's, circa 1790. |
Those folks at Gadsby's Tavern keep throwing parties like its ...1786.
In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Gadsby’s was the center of social and political life in Alexandria and the new Federal City of Washington. The tavern served as the premier gathering place for residents -- including George Washington -- and visitors to eat, drink, learn, and influence history. Gadsby’s Tavern Museum is throwing a festive ball on Saturday, Nov. 22. The celebration takes place in 1786, and Governor Henry will first be welcomed at an exclusive pre-ball reception from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Then, the Governor will attend the ball being held in his honor in the historic ballroom.
The evening will feature a variety of English country dances, live music, dessert collation, gaming, and a cash bar. Period costume is optional, but “after-five” attire encouraged. Tickets for the special reception and ball are $75 each. Tickets for the ball only are for 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. and cost $45 in advance or $50 at the door (if tickets are available). Reservations are required and can be made by calling 703.838.4242. Tickets can be purchased online at www.gadsbystavern.org.
