WASHINGTON - Alexandria's mayor will face a challenger from within her own party in the city’s June Democratic primary.

Vice Mayor Justin Wilson announced Monday that he would seek the city’s top post and oppose Allison Silberberg, who is serving her first term in the mayor’s office.

Wilson has served three terms on the City Council. In a statement to supporters, he pledged to modernize the city’s schools, improve sidewalks and sewers and to build the West End Transitway.

Silberberg, who unseated four-term Mayor Bill Euille in 2015, previously filed paperwork setting up her re-election campaign and told WTOP that she will run for another term. All six council seats will also be on the ballot. Alexandria elected officials serve three-year terms.

Voters in Virginia will also decide races for U.S. House and Senate next year.
