WARSAW -
The timing is perfect. The American president badly needs a friendly crowd to welcome him to Europe this week, and Poland’s leaders, after a series of embarrassing missteps abroad, are desperate to show that Warsaw still matters on the world stage.

Donald Trump should feel comfortably at home. Poland’s leaders — like him — sharply oppose immigration, harbor doubts about climate change and don’t intend to give up on coal-generated energy. He will also like the Polish chill toward the European Union and other supranational organizations.

Arriving on Wednesday night, just before the Hamburg G20 leaders’ meeting, Trump’s 16 hours in Warsaw carry great resonance. Polish President Andrzej Duda will be proud to officially host his American counterpart even before this pleasure will be granted — if at all — to the likes of Queen Elizabeth, Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Emmanuel Macron.
