WASHINGTON, DC. -
Congressman Steve Scalise underwent surgery Thursday, one day after he was moved back to the intensive care unit at MedStar Washington Hospital, and his condition was changed from good to serious, his family says.. Scalise, who was the most seriously injured when a gunman apparently targeted Republicans at a baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, was shot in the hip June 14.

The hospital shared an update on the Louisiana Representative's condition late in the day, noting "Congressman Steve Scalise underwent surgery for the management of infection. He tolerated the procedure well. He remains in serious condition. We will provide updates as appropriate."

Scalise was one of five people shot by the gunman, identified as James Hodgkinson, of Illinois. The House Majority Whip suffered a gunshot wound to his left hip. The bullet traveled directly across the other hip, in what doctors call a transpelvic gunshot wound.

The bullet fragmented, and caused significant damage to bones, internal organs and blood vessels, doctors said. He has already undergone operations to control bleeding, manage abdominal injuries and repair broken bones.

Capitol Police officers Crystal Griner and David Bailey., a congressional aide and a lobbyist for Tyson Foods were also injured in the shooting.

After the gunman fired off dozens of shots, the Capitol Police began firing at Hodgkinson, who died from his injuries. Hodgkinson reportedly posted anti-Trump messages on Facebook and he apparently targeted Republican lawmakers in the shooting.

Scalise was moved out of intensive care on June 22, the hospital said, after undergoing several surgeries and facing an extended recuperation period and more surgeries.

This is the first time a federal lawmaker has been shot since 2011, when then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot at a public meeting in Tuscon, Arizona. Giffords had no protective detail at the time, and the shooting led to heightened security concerns for members of Congress. Giffords has since become a vocal advocate for gun control.
