ALEXANDRIA, VA. - Democrat Elizabeth Guzman, of Woodbridge, is vying to be the first Latina and among the first, first-generation immigrants to serve in the Virginia General Assembly.

The 44-year-old mom of four immigrated to the U.S. from Peru 18 years ago with her then 6-year-old daughter. She initially juggled three jobs – daytime shifts at Wendy’s, overnights at CVS and weekends at the old Hecht’s department store – just to afford the $250 in rent a relative charged her to sleep in their living room.

But Guzman didn’t stay in low-end jobs for long.

Because she spent two years studying English while working as a secretary for a multi-national corporation in Peru, Guzman soon landed a series of administrative jobs -- first with a Vienna health-care company and later with Fairfax County schools, Fairfax County government and a construction company – in which her bilingual skills were an asset.
