General Election 2018: Absentee Voting To Open In Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA, VA. — Absentee voting for Virginia's 2018 general election will open on Friday, Sept. 21. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 6.

Absentee voting is an alternative to voting on Election Day for those unable to make it to the polls. Residents are able to cast an absentee ballot if they're:

  • Away for personal business, work, vacation, active military service or at school.
  • Working and commuting for 11 or more hours, between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., on Election Day. (Account for those days when traffic is heavy or the weather is bad and it takes longer than usual to get to and from work.)
  • Physically unable to go to the polls because of an illness or disability.
  • A caregiver for a family member confined at home.
  • Pregnant.
  • A "first responder" (firefighter, law enforcement, emergency medical technician, search and rescue).
  • Active Duty Merchant Marine or Armed Forces (or a spouse/dependent of someone on Active Duty).
  • A Precinct Election Officer.
  • Confined, awaiting trial (or convicted of a misdemeanor).

We've rounded up information on the ways to vote absentee and how voters can prepare to vote on Election Day in Alexandria.

How to vote absentee

Absentee voting is available in-person and by mail. Beginning Sept. 21, City of Alexandria residents can vote absentee at the Voter Registration Office (132 North Royal Street) Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Another option is voting at Beatley Library (5005 Duke Street) starting Oct. 27. Check for extended hours leading up to Election Day on Alexandria's absentee voting website.

The deadline for in-person absentee voting is 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3.

A photo ID is required to vote absentee in-person. Voters that do not have the proper ID can apply and receive a temporary ID when casting their in-person absentee ballot.

To vote by mail, residents must submit an application to have an absentee ballot mailed to them by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30. The Voter Registration Office must receive applications by this time. Photo ID is not required for this type of absentee voting.

Ballots are mailed within two business days. Voters can return a completed ballot by mail or in-person to the Voter Registration Office, 132 North Royal St., Suite 100, Alexandria, VA. 22314. The deadline to return the completed absentee ballot is by 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6.

Preparing for Election Day

Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. A proper form of photo ID is required to vote.

The voter registration deadline for the 2018 general election is Oct. 15.
Virginia residents who are U.S. citizens and at least 18 by Nov. 6 are eligible to register. The easiest way to register is online at

Voters can also download a voter registration application from Alexandria's election website and mail to Office of Voter Registration and Elections, 132 North Royal, Suite 100 Alexandria, VA 22314.

The third option is registering to vote in-person at the Office of Voter Registration (132 North Royal Street, Suite 100) Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. or the Division of Motor Vehicles (2681 Mill Road) during DMV hours.

The general election includes races for U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, Alexandria Mayor, Alexandria City Council and Alexandria School Board, as well as two proposed amendments to the Virginia Constitution.
