ALEXANDRIA, VA. - Happy Tart Bakery is back, and it's better than ever. The bakery at 2307 Mt Vernon Avenue has reopened after closing for renovations last December.

Owner and executive chef Emma Cech, who has two kids with Celiac disease, has seen the restaurant become quite the staple in Del Ray and the DC region over six years. Perhaps it's because it's been named a top gluten-free bakery in the U.S., or since visitors with gluten intolerance have meager options in the DC area.

"We get customers that are visitors to DC, Cech told Patch Wednesday as customers stopped in during dinner hours. "We're a destination for out of town [visitors]."

There's a noticeable difference at the bakery, and it's not just the bright red paint on the walls. The first thing you'll see is a mural leading up to the entrance, which was painted by local artist Sophie Ames. And it's not just a walkway to the entrance—Happy Tart now has outdoor seating with patio heaters for the winter season.

When you walk into the bakery, you'll see that there's now a seating area to enjoy owner Cech's gluten-free cakes, pastries and other delicacies. Customers can also see the crepe chef in action, which Cech says is "really fun to watch." (Subscribe to a Patch News Alert and Newsletter for more local coverage.)

With the reopening, the shop is putting a greater emphasis on its crepe offerings. During brunch hours, the bakery has a tasty crepe and omelet combination called a "crepelet." It's also serving up The Tea Spot tea, making for tasty lattes such as the London Fog (Earl Gray tea, milk and vanilla syrup), and Commonwealth Joe French press coffee.

Another exciting new addition will be alcoholic offerings. Cech is applying for a Virginia ABC license and expects to have it in about two months. The bakery plans to feature beer, wine and local ciders.

The shop reopened last Saturday during Art on the Avenue, but grand opening festivities are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 14. Throughout the day, customers can enter for multiple $10 gift cards, but they must be present for the drawing. They can also enter for a $50 gift card drawing, which they do not need to be present for.

As Happy Tart Bakery gets back to business as usual, it will look forward to holiday events, including the popular pie tasting around Thanksgiving and gingerbread houses for the Christmas season.

Happy Tart Bakery has been in Del Ray for six years, and its Falls Church location has been open for two years. Cech, a Del Ray resident, is happy to be back open in her community.

"You know all the customers. [Del Ray] just has such a great community feel," she tells Patch. "I love the fact that there's no chains and everything is unique."
