“Everyone wants a bargain in this economy," said Toni Henderson
of Mint Condition.

ALEXANDRIA, VA. - A rainbow of color-organized clothing adorns the Old Town interior of Mint Condition Consignment Boutique as owner Toni Henderson explains her vision.

“Everyone wants a bargain in this economy," Henderson said.  "Consignment is a recession-friendly and green concept.  Not only is it recycling clothing, customers here pay only a third of what they would pay at regular retail.  Some garments have never been worn, and those that have been have to be in good condition—mint condition!”

Chicly dressed in her own consigned clothing, Henderson told Local Kicks that her mother had owned a consignment shop for thirty years in Minneapolis.

Henderson worked there as a youth, and grew up in the consignment business.  She worked at a large law firm in DC after college, and in 2008, right smack in the middle of the economic meltdown, opened her chic boutique at 114 S. Royal Street.

There are hundreds of items in the two stories of Mint Condition, from an array of desired designers.  To name just a few, they include Anthropologie, Ann Taylor, Betsey Johnson, Calvin Klein, Lacroix, Louboutin, D&G, Jil Sander, Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren, St. John, Theory and Vera Wang.

And the list goes on with all the well-known favorites.  After 60 days on the rack at Mint Condition, items are further reduced to one half price.

Henderson says that in the DC area, consigning items is popular because there are so many special events and parties.

“Once a customer has been photographed at an event in a particular item, that photo winds up all over Facebook and the Internet—so after that she is looking for a new item to wear at subsequent events," she said. "So she can bring an item to me and someone else can use it.  Especially young professionals are eager to have a new look when they go out for a big event.”

Customers often line up outside for the markdown dates to get their favorite items.

“Once we had the most gorgeous pair of Gucci shoes," Henderson recalled last week. "On the day of the markdown, when I opened the store, there was a line of women out front all wanting that pair.  But, one customer had called ahead and made a higher offer, so based on that special arrangement, I sold them to her at that particular price.”

Henderson accepts merchandise from customers by appointment during normal operating hours, which are Tuesday thru Saturday, 11 to 7, and Sunday 12 to 5.

At the end of February, Henderson will be offering discounts of 50 to 80 percent off all winter merchandise, to make room for spring fashions.
