Basking in my staycation in the Penthouse Suite of the Donovan House.
Whether it’s work, school, carpool, errands, meetings, appointments, or events; the word vacation rarely makes the cut in our life schedule.
Even when we are able to sit down and breathe, between the tweeting, texting, and emailing…is it still considered downtime? Taking a week off from life can be stressful in itself...not to mention expensive.
So how do we re-boot without breaking budget or interrupting our daily routine? One word: Staycation.

As the sun goes down over Thomas Circle, staycation bliss.
After my insane week and no vacation days in sight, I needed to escape the city lights to clear my head. So, I decided to take a staycation right down the street on Thomas Circle at The Donovan House. I am not going to lie, I was a tad skeptical that driving only 1.2 miles away from my apartment would not give me the getaway I needed; Wow, was I wrong.
Walking into The Donovan Hotel was like finding the perfect outfit, everything complemented one another. The retro-chic atmosphere made for the hot dress that hugs in just the right places, the rooftop pool is that chunky turquoise necklace you just had to have, and the Asian inspired restaurant Zen Tan is definitely the pair of pumps that cause people to stare as you strut your stuff.
Having swiped my room key, I was immediately transported to the sleek and fabulous 50’s era. The shag pillows, stark walls, spiral shower, and sexy leather furniture all created this rock star atmosphere- it was amazing. My room was right over Thomas Circle, and even though I have driven around it thousands of times, looking at it from a bird’s eye view gave it a totally different perspective.

Big roomy room, check. Big HDTV, double-check.
After I settled in, I headed towards The Donovan’s infamous rooftop pool. I have sipped many a cherry mojitos up top, but never have had the luxury of lying out, until my staycation, that is.
The pool was perfectly refreshing and the music, such as Gloria Jones’ Tainted Love, brought out my inner rock star even more. As I was soaking up the summer sun, I totally forgot where I was. The Donovan House brings L.A. chic to D.C.
It’s amazing that the 14th floor has the ability to block out the loud noises of the city. For the first time in awhile, I felt completely stress-free.
A jump in the spiral shower later and I was ready for dinner at the well renowned Zen Tan restaurant located right in The Donovan. I didn’t think anything could top the rooftop pool, that is, until I noticed hundreds of candles that elegantly lit the restaurant.
The menu is very reasonable and the quality of food is divine. The spicy yellowtail roll and fresh wasabi melted in my mouth and the Stir Fried Pearl Noodles with scallops, shrimp, and fresh vegetables was perfectly portioned and absolutely delicious. Overall, the trendy décor, knowledgeable wait staff, and delectable cuisine made for a wonderful staycation dinner.
Even though my visit at The Donovan House Hotel was short and sweet, it was just what I needed to re-charge for the busy work week ahead.
Staycation is the new vacation, and it’s a fabulous way to escape the craziness of everyday life.
