ALEXANDRIA, VA. - It wouldn't be Fourth of July without a dazzling fireworks show. But given the laws regulating fireworks in Alexandria and Virginia, it's important to know what isn't allowed before you kick off your own celebrations.

Although state law allows certain types of fireworks such as sparklers, local jurisdictions can ban any or all of these. That's the case in Alexandria, where it's illegal to possess, use, sell or even store any kind of fireworks. Fireworks violations are considered Class 1 misdemeanors and can carry maximum penalties of fines up to $2,500 and/or a year in jail.

Surrounding jurisdictions like Arlington and Fairfax counties permit the sale and use or certain kinds of fireworks. But officials advise that fireworks aren't allowed in Alexandria city limits.
