Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend: Parade, Full Schedule

ALEXANDRIA, VA. - Alexandrians are in for a packed weekend of holiday fun Dec. 1-3. In Old Town alone, the weekend will feature the popular Scottish Christmas Walk Parade and Holiday Boat Parade of Lights.

Thousands are expected to attend the Campagna Center's 47th annual Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend, which benefits programs serving over 2,000 children and families in Alexandria.

The weekend coincides with the Holiday Boat Parade of Lights and Del Ray's tree lighting. If you're feeling ambitious, you could find a way to attend multiple events throughout the weekend.

Here's a full schedule of events to help you plan ahead:

Friday, Dec. 1

Taste of Scotland

6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. for patrons, 8 p.m.-10:30 p.m. for general admission

The Atrium Building, 277 South Washington Street, Alexandria


Taste a variety of Scotches direct from Scotland distilleries, Scottish ale sampling, as well as beer, wine and food. A special patrons' hour will also feature rare, top-shelf Scotch and passed hors d'oeuvres. Proceeds from the event benefit the Campagna Center programs. Tickets are $110-$290, but this event is sold out, and tickets will not be available at the door.

Heather and Greens Sale

9 a.m.-5 p.m.

The Campagna Center, 418 S. Washington Street, Alexandria


Shop for wreaths, garlands, fresh heather bundles and more to deck out your home for the holiday season.

Del Ray Artisans' Annual Holiday Market

6 p.m.-9 p.m.

Del Ray Artisans, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria


The market offers unique handmade products from local artists, including pottery, photography, jewelry, fiber, paper crafts and glass. Artists donate a percentage of their sales back to Del Ray Artisans to help support future exhibits and programs.

Saturday, Dec. 2

Scottish Christmas Walk Parade

11 a.m.

St. Asaph Street, Queen Street, Fairfax Street to King Street


The iconic Scottish Christmas Walk Parade features dozens of Scottish clans dressed in colorful tartans parade through the streets of Old Town, joined by pipe and drum bands from around the region, as well as terriers and hounds. The parade begins at St. Asaph and Wolfe Streets and concludes at Market Square with a massed band concert. It will take place rain or shine.

Holiday Boat Parade of Lights

Parade at 5:30 p.m., Festivities from 2 p.m.-9 p.m.

Alexandria waterfront


Alexandria's waterfront is illuminated with 50 boats decked out with lights that cruise by on the Potomac River for the 18th annual parade. A panel of judges will award prizes in a dozen categories, including Best in Show, Thinking Outside the Christmas Box, and Hardiest Souls. Festivities will begin at the waterfront by the Torpedo Factory Art Center at 2 p.m. and go on through 9 p.m. Santa Claus will arrive by fire boat at 3 p.m. and will walk to the Torpedo Factory Art Center and meet with children until 6 p.m.

Parade viewing locations include Founders Park (351 North Union Street), Alexandria City Marina (0 Cameron Street), Waterfront Park (1A Prince Street), Shipyard/Harborside Park (1 Wilkes Street), and Ford's Landing Park (99 Franklin Street).

Del Ray Tree Lighting

6 p.m.

Pat Miller Neighborhood Square (Mount Vernon and East Oxford Avenues)


Del Ray will hold its Christmas tree lighting, along with a visit from Santa and decorating contest for businesses.

Alexandria Archaeology Ornament Decorating Workshop

1 p.m.-4 p.m.

Alexandria Archaeology Museum, Torpedo Factory Art Center, 105 N. Union Street #327, Alexandria


Decorate take-home paper ornaments using shapes, colors, and patterns from Alexandria's 18th and 19th-century excavated artifacts. The event is free with no registration required.

Del Ray Artisans' Annual Holiday Market

11 a.m.-6 p.m.

Del Ray Artisans, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria

Explore Alexandria's history by taking a look inside some of Old Town's dazzling homes decked out for the holidays by acclaimed interior designers and local florists. Tickets are $40.

Sunday, Dec. 3
