ALEXANDRIA, VA. -
Community members around Alexandria will gather for block parties for the 35th annual National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 7 from 5 p.m.-10 p.m.

More than 30 Alexandria neighborhoods are organizing block parties with cookouts and turning on their porch lights in support of National Night Out. Members of City Council, City Manager Mark Jinks, Police Chief Michael Brown, Fire Chief Robert Dubé, Sheriff Dana Lawhorne and other city officials and first responders will take part.

Alexandria Police's K-9 Unit, Motor Unit, Bike Patrol, Command Bus, Armored Personnel Carrier, and Crime Scene Mobile Lab will tour neighborhoods and provide demonstrations. Alexandria Fire Department engines and fire trucks will pay visits to various neighborhoods.

Sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), National Night Out is part of a nationwide effort to prevent crime and drugs in local communities. The event generates support and participation in local anti-crime programs, boosts neighborhood price and partnerships with law enforcement and sends a message to criminals that neighborhoods are fighting back.
