FAIRFAX, VA. - Join Mark Irchai, pianist and prize winner of the XIV International Orfeo Music Competition, for a solo recital featuring some of the finest works written for piano during the 20th century. He will begin with In the Mists, by the Czech composer Leoš Janáček - a haunting work that alludes to scenes from childhood and folk dances. He then continues to the monumental Piano Sonata of Samuel Barber, written for and premiered by Vladimir Horowitz. A monumental work, the piece makes frequent appearances at various important piano competitions. He concludes his program with the charming incidental music to L'Histoire de Babar, le petit éléphant (The Story of Babar, the little elephant), which Poulenc wrote after improvising at the piano while reading the story to his grandchildren. Assisting him in the performance is George Mason University faculty member Professor John Aler as narrator. Mark's is offered with free admission, and is open to audiences of all ages.
