Arlington, VA. - If you and your kids are suffering from cabin fever, take advantage of the multitude of local children’s theater companies and their upcoming productions.  While Maryland’s Imagination Stage and Adventure Theatre are wildly talented and popular, this compilation focuses on two neighboring theaters with productions in February and March.

Synetic Family Theater and Encore Stage and Studio all perform their productions in Arlington at locations that are six miles or less from Old Town's Masonic Temple.

Synetic Family Theater, formerly Classika Theatre, was founded in 2001 and is comprised predominantly of adult professional actors.  This company blends drama, dance, music and mime into a unique form of theater, which is both accessible and avant-garde.  Their current production is Puss ‘n Boots, which began January 23 and runs through March 14 in Shirlington Village.

It is a new adaptation by Ramola D based on Charles Perrault’s classic fairy tale.  For those of us more intrigued lately with Michaele Salahi’s designer boots than a cat’s boots, here’s a refresher on the tale.  A bright cat Puss discovers that when he wears human boots, he transforms into a skilled dancer and guides his poor master to a luxurious life.

Nicholas Allen, the director and choreographer, enticingly summed up this production: "This show is really about one thing; the ability to transform oneself.  How one simple change to our exterior can spark and ignite the fires trapped within us."

If it is in the same realm as Allen’s previous direction of Peter and the Wolf, kids will be thrilled.

Don’t procrastinate purchasing your tickets as the Sunday, January 24 performance sold out in advance online.  The theater’s suggested age range is four years and up, and the run time is one hour.

Approximately two miles away is Encore Stage and Studio/The Children’s Theatre with 43 years under its belt.  Encore Stage is a teaching theatre, which offers productions for and by children.  All of their performances are held at the Thomas Jefferson Community Theatre, which is part of the Thomas Jefferson Middle School.
Its upcoming production is Hansel and Gretel, which runs from Feb. 26 – March 7.  Their adaptation by Vera Morris features the nasty, but funny witch encountered by the brother and sister team at the candy-coated cottage.  Doesn’t a candy-coated cottage soothe cabin fever any day?  The theater’s website does not indicate a run time, but their productions generally run long and include intermission.
