The cast of Mamma Mia!.
WASHINGTON, DC - Good news for those who have been waiting for Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus’ MAMMA MIA! to come back to DC. The smash hit musical, based on the songs of ABBA, returns to National Theatre for a limited engagement from March 4 to 9.
MAMMA MIA! is the tenth longest running show in Broadway history. With more than 5000 performances, it has been by over 54 million people around the world.
Inspired by the storytelling magic of ABBA’s songs from “Dancing Queen” and “S.O.S.” to “Money, Money, Money” and “Take a Chance on Me,” MAMMA MIA! is a celebration of mothers and daughters, old friends and new family found.
An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, Donna is about to let go of Sophie, the spirited daughter she’s raised alone. For Sophie’s wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best girlfriends—practical and no-nonsense Rosie and wealthy, multi-divorcee Tanya - from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own.
On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna’s past to the Mediterranean paradise they visited 20 years earlier. Over 24 chaotic, magical hours, new love will bloom and old romances will be rekindled on this lush island full of possibilities.
Vince and Jennifer Wingerter are fortunate enough to be together as a family. This married couple has been performing together ever since they met almost five years ago, with only a couple exceptions. They met as Production Singers with Celebrity Cruise Lines and spent the first six months of their relationship traveling the Baltic, Mediterranean and Europe. Since then, they have done many shows at various theaters across the U.S., quite often playing opposite each other.
They love traveling together, but they do enjoy seeing the rest of their family, and said, “[We get home] Only on occasion. We've been lucky to have done several shows in the Seattle area (Vince's hometown) and we were excited that "Mamma Mia!" performed at the beautiful Fisher Theatre in Detroit (Jennifer's hometown). We also try to make it home (to one or the other) for holidays if at all possible. If we were to consider NYC home (we are based out of Manhattan), it is only in between contracts that we are there.”
Donna is part of the ensemble and understudy for Donna and Tanya. Vince is also part of the ensemble, serving as understudy for Sam and Bill.
As understudies, they said, “It's important for us to be ready to go on at a moment’s notice for either of the roles that we cover. That means being in good vocal health, keeping up on the music and staging, taking into account any changes that have been made since rehearsal, and making sure that the audience gets a seamless performance. They do! The understudies in our production are incredible and we have fun supporting each other when we go on and the principals when we are in the ensemble. Those performances where we have gone on we enjoy cheering each other on from the sidelines. We are lucky to be a part of this rewarding production.”
The Wingerters have been with this tour of "Mamma Mia!" from its origination and said, “We had our tech rehearsal in September in Clemson and we opened at the beginning of October in Orlando. We've been all over the country ever since.”
Vince and Jennifer love being a part of the ensemble that is full of dedicated, professional and talented performers. Every show they have a blast, and said, “The best part of being in this show is getting to sing all of this great ABBA music with this amazing group of people. The ensemble sings every song in the show whether they are on or offstage.”
They are looking forward to coming to DC because they love DC. They have been there before on personal visits, family vacations and school trips – they are looking forward to catching some of the things that you don't when you're a tourist.
