ALEXANDRIA, VA. - Ladies, and those who like to laugh with them, will be amused by this heartwarming comedy-drama offered by the Aldersgate Community Theater in Alexandria.  If you have reached middle age, you will sympathize.  If not, listen and learn.  Directed by Eddie Page, and Produced by Jean Coyle, Corey Latta Bales and Eddy Roger Parker, this play was written by the team of writers who gave us the Golden Girls on TV.

Such punchy one liners as “PMS is mentioned in the Bible”, the mileposts of life of the alumna of a college swim team are played out in a beachfront cabin on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  The play also celebrates the unique culture of southern women, and a hilarious rant about the virtues of biscuits kicks off the second act.  The women have been through it all: pregnancy, divorce, the convent, and cosmetic surgery.  The action spans several decades as the women reunite each summer for group swims, group hugs, and multiple martinis.

Director Eddie Page commented about his own set design, “I wanted the audience member to feel that they were the extra friend right there in the living room, not on the outside looking in, so I reversed the set direction written in the script.”  Page is a local theater veteran director, with nine other plays under his belt.

Theater goer Elizabeth Brown of Alexandria commented, “It’s Steel Magnolias and the Golden girls.  A laughter filled tale of martini-fueled friendships that are tempered by irreverent southern wit and charm.”  The cast of five friends sustains the action with good chemistry and credibility, and includes Tina Anderson, Janette Moman, Edye Smith, Lise Downing, and Lorraine Bouchard.  A sense of the passage of time over the decades is provided by short video vignettes, produced by Austin Fodrie.

The Dixie Swim Club plays at the Aldersgate church Community Theater until July 24.
