WASHINGTON, DC - Washingtonians have held on to a secret a long while - one of the most spectacular hidden gems in our nation's capital is none other than the Hillwood Estate, Museum and Garden.  This spectacular property was once owned by heiress and founder of General Mills - Marjorie Merriweather Post and sits atop a hill not to far from the National Zoo in Northwest Washington.

This week the exhibit Cartier: Marjorie Merriweather Post's Dazzling Gems opened with a spectacular gala and dinner.  This night was particularly special because it was a night to recognize family and the tutelage of Ellen Charles.  The event was attended by Post's extended family and recognized Mrs. Charles who served as Hillwood's board president for the last 25 years and who was responsible for transforming her grandmother's estate into a functioning museum.

Guests were able to stroll the grounds and through the house, the gardens, greenhouse and of course the Adirondack Building where the Cartier exhibit is housed.  The Cartier: Marjorie Merriweather Post's Dazzling Gems shows examples of Cartier's skillful craftsmanship and fine French style with this collection of unbelievable jewels, precious frames, jeweled boxes, paintings and personal effects.  The exhibit provide a rather intimate look at how Post's patronage of Cartier was emblematic of her lifelong passion for collecting objects of the finest craftsmanship, historical significance and true splendor.

Also it was clear that Post loved sparkle.  “Grandmother loved big jewelry,” explained granddaughter Ellen Charles, who lives locally in Georgetown and also served co-chair of the gala.

Clearly the real gem of the last twenty five years truly has proven to be none other than Ellen Charles.  Guests toasted and sang to Mrs. Charles throughout the evening to honor her as she steps down as Hillwood’s chairman-of-the-board and also because it was the night to celebrate her 77th birthday.

Visitors to Hillwood will be able to admire this fine 20th Century collection of  the emeralds, sapphires, and diamonds starting this weekend through the end of the year.  Take a day to spend at Hillwood to enjoy this exhibit and an urban oasis that blends exquisite arts and lush botanicals in DC.  It truly is a hidden gem and national treasure!  Hillwood Estate, Museum and Garden: Where Fabulous Lives

Truly the Hillwood gala was a family affair! Outgoing chair of the board at Hillwood and honoree Ellen Charles, her Aunt Ann Close and incoming board president to Hillwood - grand-daughter Nancy Appleby.
A great legacy of the heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post -  grandchildren, great grandchildren and even a great great grand child on the way!
Alexandria residents Tuckie and Don Westfall were dazzled by not only the splendor of the Cartier collection, but by the magnificent grounds a Hillwood.
