Art On The Avenue 2017: 5 Things To Know

ALEXANDRIA, VA - An estimated 50,000 people will descend upon Mount Vernon Avenue for the annual Art on the Avenue on Saturday, Oct. 7 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Held between between Bellefonte and Hume avenues in Del Ray, artists set up shop while they're joined by live performers and food vendors.

To get ready for the exciting multi-cultural arts festival, here are five things to know:

1. More than 300 artists are participating this year.

Art on the Avenue is a rare opportunity to purchase handmade goods from hundreds of artists. Some offerings include wheel-thrown vases and bowls, tiles, sculpture, hand-embossed leather belts, tote bags and purses, drawings and pastels, knitted and crocheted hats and gloves, woven scarves and shawls, gourmet food, fused and blown glass, jewelry, turned wood bowls, paintings, photography, wooden puzzles and much more. 2. You can watch fun, live demonstrations.

The festival offers a lot of interactive fun in addition to the numerous vendors. Artists and other organizations will show off their products and services throughout the day. Attendees can observe live worker bees, work on a collaborative art piece, watch a 3-D printer in action and more.

3. Art on the Avenue has five stages for performances throughout the day.

The art of music is appreciated in its own right at the festival. The five stages have different performers scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Here's the lineup:

Twin Stages

10 a.m.: Chris Ullman - Four Time International Whistling Champion
11 a.m.: Word Of Mouth - Acapella
12 p.m.: Billy And Bob Classic Country Show -Classic Country/Honky Tonk
1 p.m.: Just Wingin' It -Bluegrass
2 p.m.: Left On Lincoln - Rock And Roll
3 p.m.: Big Boy Little Band - Blues
4 p.m.: Irish Breakfast Band - Irish
5 p.m.: Vintage #18 - Soul And Blues

Homegrown Stage

12-12:45 p.m.: Janna Audey Band - Rock
1-1:45 p.m.: ERS Trio - Classic Country
2-2:45 p.m.: Carter Farm Band - Americana
3-3:45 p.m.: Dk’s Wolf - Classic Rock
4-5 p.m. Free Flowing Musical Experience

4. The food options are plentiful and delicious.

There's just as much reason to attend for the food. Restaurants will be offering limited menu selections. The participating restaurants are:

5. The Pie Baking Contest tradition lives on.

What is Art on the Avenue without the Pie Baking Contest? The pies will be on display starting at noon across from the Festival Store (between Del Ray and Oxford avenues). Judging begins at 12:15 p.m. ,and sales will kick off around 1 p.m. with slices available for $4 each. Prizes will be awarded in three divisions – youth (17 and under), amateur and new this year, professional bakers.

This year's judges are:

  • Bobi Bomar of Homes of Alexandria, Del Ray resident, realtor and long-time Pie Contest sponsor
  • Dana Lawhorne Alexandria’s Sheriff and esteemed Art on the Avenue pie judge
  • “Heart of Del Ray” award winner Serdar Basegmez of the Greener Cleaner at 2210 Mt. Vernon Ave.

The sales will support Together We Bake, a job training program for woman in need of a second chance.
