ALEXANDRIA, VA. - Alexandria residents wait all year long to hear the sounds of bagpipes and catch the sight of the parade of tartans through the streets of Old Town the first weekend of December. At last - that weekend is finally here!
The Campagna Center's Scottish 46th Christmas Walk Weekend and Parade launches Alexandria's holiday season with events to celebrate and honor Alexandria's Scottish founders. The Campagna Center and it's fundraising groups - The Junior and Supporting Friends as well as The St. Andrew’s Society of Washington, D.C. and the Scottish Government help usher in the holiday season in Alexandria with a multi-day celebration including the beloved Scottish Christmas Walk Parade through the streets of Old Town.
The Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend & Parade draws as many as 30,000 participants and families annually to the city of Alexandria, Virginia. Over the years, the Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend & Parade has grown from a small, informal parade to an entire weekend filled with events and festivities. Along with The St. Andrews Society more than 120 Scottish Clans, pipe and drum bands, Scottish dancers, re-enactment groups, canine marchers, local dignitaries, and, of course, Santa Claus participate in the highlight of the weekend - the beloved parade on Saturday morning.
In addition to the Scottish Walk Parade, SCWW events include Friday's Taste of Scotland - an evening of top-shelf whiskeys and Scottish fare, Heather and Greens sales, the Holiday Designer Tour of Homes, and Deck the Halls with Santa children’s party at St. Paul's Episcopal.
The Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend & Parade is the largest fundraising activity for The Campagna Center and is coordinated and planned by The Junior Friends of The Campagna Center. Since 1970, Junior Friends has provided critical fundraising and volunteer support to the Center - helping to support Alexandria's neediest families and children.
