ALEXANDRIA, VA. - T. C. Williams High School track and field athletes competed in the 6A State Championship at Todd Stadium in Newport News on June 2-3. The Titans returned with one state champion and three runners-up plus other athletes who medaled and earned All-State honors.

T. C. senior Ebenezer Belayneh won first place in discus to be crowned the 2017 State Champion. His throw of 169 feet 5 inches, while not a season-best mark, was three-and-a-half feet farther than the next competitor. Belayneh also took third place in shot put (55 ft. 4 in.) at the State Championship. Leading up to states, he was the 2017 Patriot Conference Champion in both discus and shot put, and the 6A North Region Runner-Up in both events. He also set a new school record in discus (174 ft. 1 in.). Belayneh will continue his track and field career at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Three T. C. athletes earned the 2017 State Runners-Up title in their event. Junior Terrence Sakyi took second place in high jump, matching his season-best mark of 6 ft. 6 in. Sophomore Ibrahim Bangura finished second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.87 seconds. For the T. C. girls, sophomore Nyla Ward took second place in long jump with a season-best mark of 19 ft. 11.75 in. Ward was the 2017 Patriot Conference Champion and 6A North Region Champion.
