Three world records were set at the inaugural World Rowing Indoor Championships, which were held this past weekend at T. C. Williams High School in Alexandria. The world records were set by:  

–Olena Buryak, a 30-year-old rower from Ukraine, who won the open women’s category and set the new world record for women age 30-39 with a time of 6:26.1. Her time was more than two seconds faster than the previous record set 14 years ago.

–Christine Cavallo, 22, a Stanford graduate and native of Florida, who won the women’s lightweight race with a time of 6:54.1, shaving 0.6 of a second off the former world record.

–Andrew Benko, a 50-year-old athlete from Dubuque, Iowa, who broke his own world record to capture the 2000 meter race in the 50-54 year-old men’s open category.
