ALEXANDRIA, VA. – With the high school football season under way for the majority of local schools, T.C. Williams dropped a 35-2 home contest last weekend to the Concorde District Robinson Rams.
The Patriot District Titans, coached by veteran Dennis Randolph, will attempt to even their record at 1-1 overall when they are scheduled to host the National District Mount Vernon Majors on the newsworthy date of September 11th.
One week later, T.C. will travel to Concorde District Oakton for a showdown with the Cougars. Some of the top players for T.C. this season include linebacker/safety Damien Benton, defensive lineman Joe Massaquoi and offensive lineman Jay Whitmire.
Private school Bishop Ireton dropped a 20-13 road contest to arch-rival O'Connell (Arlington). The Cardinals, coached by veteran Tony Verducci, merely trailed the Knights 12-7 at halftime, but Ireton could not take a second half lead.
Both Ireton scores came on plays of 21 yards or greater; all three O'Connell scores came on plays of 30 yards or greater. The Cardinals are scheduled to host Benedictine (Richmond) on September 11th and then are scheduled to visit Woodberry Forest (Orange) on September 18th.
Private schools St. Stephens/St. Agnes and Episcopal have yet to play their first game of the season.
The aforementioned Saints, coached by veteran Dave Holm, are scheduled to visit St. Christophers (Richmond) on Sept. 11 and then are scheduled to visit St. Anne's Belfield (Charlottesville) merely five days later on Sept. 16.
The Maroon, on the other hand, coached by veteran Mark Gowin, will not commence their season until Sept. 17 when the "Black and Maroon" are scheduled to host Flint Hill (Oakton).
Two Maroon alumni that have moved on to higher levels of football include Arizona Cardinal third-year running back Tim Hightower and Virginia Tech redshirt junior wide receiver Danny Coale.
The Cardinals defeated the Redskins in the desert last week in their final preseason contest and Virginia Tech fell to 0-1 after a September 6th opening game loss to Boise State. Coale caught one ball for seven yards versus the Broncos on National TV.
National District Hayfield convincingly defeated Liberty District G.C. Marshall 32-14; Patriot District West Springfield soundly defeated National District Edison 29-14; Concorde District Herndon thumped Liberty District Thomas Jefferson 41-0; results from the Annandale-Centreville contest as well as from the West Potomac-Mount Vernon contest were not able to be obtained.
In the near-term future, Hayfield is scheduled to host Robert E. Lee on Sept.10 and is scheduled to visit Washington-Lee on September 16th.
Edison is scheduled to visit Centreville on Sept. 10 and is scheduled to visit Mount Vernon on September 16th; Thomas Jefferson is scheduled to visit South Lakes on September 10th and is scheduled to host Falls Church on September 16th; Annandale is scheduled to host Falls Church on September 10th and is scheduled to host South County on September 16th; West Potomac is scheduled to host Westfield on September 10th and is scheduled to host Chantilly on September 17th and finally Mount Vernon is scheduled to visit T.C. Williams on September 11th and is scheduled to host Edison on September 16th.
Other results from schools nearby: Arlington Yorktown defeated Woodrow Wilson (D.C.) 32-14; Arlington Washington-Lee fell to McLean 14-6 and finally Falls Church JEB Stuart defeated George Mason (Falls Church) 48-29.
The Nationals Weigh in at 60-78
Regarding Major League Baseball, the Washington Nationals currently weigh-in at 60-78 at the conclusion of their first 138 games of the season.
With merely 24 more games remaining in the season, the Nats are in the basement of the competitive National League East.
Currently, Washington is 19 games behind first-place Atlanta (79-59/.572) as well as 18 1/2 games behind second-place Philadelphia (79-60/.568) as well as 10 1/2 games behind third-place Florida (70-67/.511) as well as seven games behind the fourth-place New York Mets (67-71/.486).
The .435 Nats are scheduled to host the Mets September 7th (7:05) and 8th (12:35) and then are scheduled to host the Florida Marlins September 10th (7:05) and 11th (1:05) and 12th (1:35). Thereafter, the Nats will visit Atlanta for the final time this season.
The 'Skins Take on the Cowboys
Regarding the National Football League, the Washington Redskins will host the Dallas Cowboys in a very early season NFC East contest on Sunday night September 12th (8:20 p.m.) at FedEx Field (Landover, Md.).
After last seasons 4-12 overall record during the final year of head coach Jim Zorn, the Redskins will attempt to kick off the 2010 season on a positive note under new head coach Mike Shanahan.
