ALEXANDRIA, VA. - As the 2009-10 high school athletic season comes to a close, T.C. Williams Boys Lacrosse coach Mike Mulherin was selected as the Northern Region Coach of the Year.

Other Northern Region first-team lacrosse honorees included: Annandale's Nathan Miller, Madison's Will Cybulski, Langley's Ethan Bailey, Stone Bridge's Derek Maltz and West Springfield's Eric Schauder (all on attack); Madison's Jack Rowe, Chantilly's Joey Byrne and Joe Marson, Robinson's Thomas Petrocci, Westfield's Eric Alter and West Springfield's Reese Mullins (all on midfield); Langley's Robbie Bennett and Thomas Robinson, Robinson's Mike O'Meara and West Springfield's A.J. White (all on defense) as well as Robinson's Keenan Kevan and W.T. Woodson's Brian Beatson (both goalies).

In the NCAA Division One College Baseball Playoffs, 64 teams qualified for post-season competition.

The 64 schools were assigned to 16 seperate sites and the winner of each site will soon compete in the "Super Regionals" - at eight sites.

In the double elimination tournament in Columbia, S.C. - Va. Tech went home a few hours ago as they dropped their final game to the South Carolina Gamecocks 10-2.

Previously, the Hokies defeated Bucknell 16-6 and the Citadel 4-3. Unfortunately, for the Hokies they also dropped a previous contest to Citadel 7-2 and that coupled with the defeat to South Carolina eliminated them from the opportunity to advance to the Super Regionals.

Two other teams from the Commonwealth of Virginia also qualified for the post-season, namely the University of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Playing in Charlottesville, the Cavaliers advanced out of the Regional and into the Super Regionals with a 5-3 victory versus St. Johns.

Previously, UVA defeated VCU 15-4 as well as Ole Miss 13-7.

In the Cavaliers first encounter with St. Johns, they were defeated by the Red Men 6-5 - which made the June 7th contest the deciding game in determining who would advance to the Super Regionals from the Charlottesville Regional (either Virginia or St. Johns).

The Cavaliers punched their ticket to the Super Regionals with the aforementioned 5-3 victory versus the school from Queens, N.Y.

Virginia Commonwealth University went home rather early with two consecutive losses right off of the proverbial bat. The Rams dropped a 15-4 decision to UVA as well as an 8-6 setback to St. Johns to end their season.

The Washington Nationals have dropped seven of their past nine contests and currently weigh-in at 27-31 on the season, which is just past the 1/3rd mark.

With their latest slide, the Nats are in fifth place in the very competitive National League East.

The current NL East "pecking order" is as follows: first-place Atlanta (33-24), followed by Philadelphia (30-26), followed by New York Mets (30-27) and Florida in fourth-place with a record of 28-30.

If it is any consolation, the Nats winning percentage of .466 is substantially better than the other five "cellar dwellers" in the other five Divisions in Major League Baseball.

In fact, out of the 32 teams in the majors, 10 have a worse record than do the Nats.

As if written by a Hollywood script, 21-year old right-handed pitcher Stephen Strasburg is scheduled to make his major league pitching debut tonight (June 8th) (this is being written at 2:30 pm) against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Strasburg spent April, May and a week of June hurling in the AA's and the AAA's and finished with an overall record of 7-2 before his much celebrated entrance into the Nats major league rotation tonight.

Strasburg, who graduated from San Diego State in 2009, was the Nats #1 selection in last years draft as well as the #1 draft choice overall.

San Diego State, coincidentally, is also the alma mater of Joe Gibbs - the lone Redskin coach to have ever won a Super Bowl. In fact, Gibbs won three of them during his first stint under Jack Kent Cooke. His second stint under Dan Snyder did not fare as well.

Will Strasburg lead the Nats to playoff contention this season or in upcoming seasons ?? Time will tell.
