T.C. Williams’ football team got into the win column with a convincing 23-0 victory on the road versus Mount Vernon. The Red, White and Blue Titans now weigh-in at 1-1 overall after a tough opening week loss to Robinson. In the win versus Mount Vernon, T.C. defensive tackle Jay Whitmire recorded six tackles.
Episcopal does not open its season until September 18. Bishop Ireton improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 31-7 win versus Riverdale Baptist. The Cardinals (VIS State Runners-ups in '07) will play their first three games at home this season.
"We're sort of like Nebraska...we like to play our first three games at home if possible," said energetic Ireton athletic director Bill Simmons.
St. Stephens/St. Agnes, which opened their season one week later than the public schools or Ireton, came out of the proverbial blocks strong and defeated St. Christophers (Richmond) 33-0.
Defensively, Travis Jones spearheaded the Saints with two forced fumbles. In nearby Fairfax County/Alexandria Mailing address, Annandale thumped northern neighbor Falls Church 42-12.
Stacey Anderson accounted for three of the Atoms touchdowns, as Annandale improved to 2-0.Edison, from the National District, turned back Centreville, from the high-profile Concorde District 31-30, as the Eagles improved to 1-1. The Eagles are coached by decorated head coach Vaughn Lewis.
Hayfield fell to Greater Springfield rival R.E. Lee 40-35, as the Hawks dropped to 1-1. Hayfield shifted from the Patriot District to the National District and should improve on last seasons 1-9 mark.
Jefferson, less than two miles west of Landmark Shopping Center, has found the going tough thus far in '09. The Colonials dropped a 40-0 contest to South Lakes and now weigh-in at 0-2.
Mount Vernon, alma mater of former Virginia Governor Chuck Robb, dropped a 23-0 contest to the Titans of T.C.W. as was previously stated, and now the Majors weigh-in at 0-2.
West Potomac traveled West and dropped a tough 35-14 contest to Concorde District powerhouse Westfield. The Wolverines dropped to 1-1 after one week earlier racking up nearly 400 yards of total offense in their win versus Mount Vernon.
In nearby Arlington, Bishop O'Connell High School hit the road and defeated St. Albans (N.W. D.C.) 29-25. The coaches son Josh Trimble added a 75-yard kick off return in the win. O'Connell is coached by veteran Steve Trimble.
The Knights are 1-0 on the season. Wakefield, literally a stones throw from T.C. Williams - just a mile or so west of the King Street/Quaker Lane intersection, dropped a tough 28-24 contest to Loudoun County Dominion. The Warriors led 24-7 in the contest before surrendering the games final 21 points in disheatening fashion. Wakefield dropped to 0-2.
Washington-Lee, just two miles north of Wakefield, dropped a 35-0 contest to South County. Not a whole lot went right for the Generals on offense, who now weigh-in at 0-2 on the season.
And finally, Yorktown, just two miles north of Washington-Lee, dropped a 21-3 decision to James Madison. The Patriots, which spanked Woodrow Wilson (D.C.) in week one, dropped to 1-1 overall in '09.
