ALEXANDRIA, VA. - Wouldn't it be cool to say you swam with an Olympic medalist? That's possible in Alexandria, as swimmer Amanda Weir will hold swim clinics at Chinquapin Park Recreation Center & Aquatics Facility the weekend of Feb. 3-4.

Residents of all ages can register for the clinics, observe for free, and meet the Olympian for a Q&A and autograph session after each session. The lessons will focus on high performance techniques for efficient and fast swimming. Participants will learn techniques to reduce drag and prepare for a championship season. Weir will share tips for fast racing, a confident mindset, and overcoming obstacles.

The clinics are broken into age groups:

  • Ages 9 and under: Saturday, Feb. 3 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
  • Ages 10-12: Saturday, Feb. 3 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Ages 13 and over: Sunday, Feb. 4 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Weir, 31, is a three-time Olympian. She won two silver medals at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, a bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and a silver medial at the Summer Olympics in Rio. She is also a three-time gold medalist at the World Championships. She specializes in sprint freestyle and has set numerous records for her age groups.

The recreation center will offer the clinics in partnership with Fitter & Faster. Register and see more information here.

Chinquapin Park Recreation Center & Aquatics Facility, located at 3210 King Street, will be closed for all other activities during the clinics. It will be open for all activities from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3 and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 4.
