ALEXANDRIA, VA. -- Hayfield, coached by Jimmy Linza, improved to 11-1 overall with an 12-0 thumping of Wakefield last week. In addition, Ireton dropped a 14-5 contest to Flint Hill (Oakton) and Washington-Lee defeated Yorktown 6-1.
In softball, Hayfield demolished Wakefield 19-1. O'Connell pounded Ireton 11-1 and Mount Vernon shellacked Falls Church 26-2.
In Girls Lacrosse, Ireton soundly defeated Paul VI 18-8 and Hayfield thumped Edison 19-7.
In Boys Soccer, T.C. Williams soundly defeated R.E. Lee 4-1. Mount Vernon edged Centreville 3-2 and Annandale defeated West Potomac 1-0.
In Girls Soccer, Annandale and West Potomac played to a scoreless 0-0 tie. Westfield defeated Yorktown 2-0. Oakton defeated Washington-Lee 3-1. Centreville thumped Mount Vernon 6-0 and Herndon thumped Wakefield 7-0.
In Boys Tennis, Jefferson edged Langley 5-4. Washington-Lee pounded Falls Church 8-1. Yorktown pounded Wakefield 8-1 and O'Connell pounded St. Mary's Ryken 9-0.
In Girls Tennis, Washington-Lee pounded Falls Church 9-0.
In Boys Golf, Ireton shellacked St. Johns 9-0 (match play, not to be confused with stroke play).
The Final Word on the Final 4
With the just-concluded Mens NCAA Division One Basketball approximately 200 hours in the rear-view mirror, 35 different schools have claimed at least one title since the inception of the Tournament in 1939 (a 72 year span).
In chronological order, here are the Mens Champions and the respective years in which they have claimed their titles:
1939 - Oregon, the Ducks claimed the initial title
'40 - Indiana, the Hoosiers first of five titles
'41 - Wisconsin, the Badgers from the Big Ten kept the title in the Big Ten Conference

'05 - North Carolina, the Tar Heels first title with alumnus Roy Williams at the helm (and fourth overall)

'07 - Florida, the Gators become the seventh school to win back:back titles
'08 - Kansas in a thriller versus Memphis
'09 - North Carolina in a thumper versus Michigan State
'10 - Duke, for the fourth time in school history, spearheaded by 63-year old coach Mike Krzyzewski - as the squad from Durham, N.C. defeated the Butler (Ind.) Bulldogs 61-59 in one of the finest games in the 72-year history of the Tournament.
Who will win the '11 Tournament ??
Pro Sports
The Washington Wizards season will mercifully end on April 14th when the "Wiz" host the Indiana Pacers. The "Wiz" will miss the playoffs and will conclude their season with a record of either 26-56 or 25-57.
The Caps
The powerhouse Washington Capitals, which won the "Presidents Cup" for the best record in the National Hockey League, enter the NHL playoffs as the top-seeded team in the Eastern Conference.
The Caps will host the 8th-seeded Montreal Canadiens April 15th (7 pm) and April 17th (7 pm) - before the best of seven series shifts to Montreal.
Should games five and seven be neccessary, the Canadiens will play in D.C. on April 23rd and 28th respectively.
In concluding the regular season, the Caps recorded a league leading 213 goals scored whereas Montreal only generated 132 goals.
The Nats
The Washington Nationals season has essentially just begun. Currently the Nats sit in a tie with the Atlanta Braves for third place in the National League East (a record of 3-4).
Philadelphia (6-1) and Florida (4-2) man the top two spots in the East; whereas the New York Mets (2-4) are currently in the basement amongst the five East teams.
The Nats short term future schedule is as follows: April 14 and 15 - at Philadelphia; April 16 (7:05) and April 17 (1:05) and April 18 (1:35) - host Milwaukee; April 19 (7:05) and April 20 (7:05) and April 21 (7:05) and April 22 (4:35) - host Colorado.
