ALEXANDRIA, VA. - With the area blanketed with snow, there is no concrete word as to when things will get back to reasonably normal in the world of high school athletics in Greater Alexandria.
In their most recent game to date, South Alexandria's Hayfield stepped up to the task at hand and pretty much thrashed Wakefield 59-43 in a key National District clash on Feb. 4.
The Hawks, coached by veteran Ron Palmer, came out of the proverbial blocks strong and after taking a 2-0 lead (a layup by senior Chad Canady), never looked back.
Ensuing first quarter buckets by Reggie Tate, Leon Cureton, Cureton again, a Canady trey, and a Tate layup - interspersed by eight free throws from a total of three players, gave the Orange and White a commanding 21-0 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter.
It is extremely rare for any team to go an entire quarter without scoring - but that is exactly what happened to the visiting Warriors from South Arlington.
The Hawks surrendered the first basket of the second quarter - which made the score 21-2. Thereafter, the Hawks outscored the Warriors 10-9 for the remainder of the second quarter to lead 31-11 at intermission.
In the third quarter, Wakefield outscored Hayfield 13-12 to narrowly narrow their deficit to 43-24.
In the games final anti-climatic eight minutes, Wakefield outscored the Hawks 19-16; nonetheless, the visitors from Arlington bowed out 59-43 as the game concluded.
The Hawks, who transferred from the Patriot District to the National District six months ago, were paced by: Cureton (20 points - 11 in first half), Tate (13 - 11 in first half), Canady (seven - all in first half), G.L. Cummings and Sean Michael King (four apiece), A.J. Flaviano (three) and Brandon Anderson, Rayshawn Rigans, Cory Spera and Grant Williams (two apiece).
Hayfield improved to 18-0 overall/11-0 National and remain the #4 ranked team in the entire Region by the Washington Post.
The Warriors dropped to 7-12 overall/5-6 National.
Wakefield was paced by: Kireah Mathis (11), Corey Aldrich (seven), Joao Remedios (five), Aaron Fort and Thomas Taylor (four apiece), Rayven Boyd and Terry Davis (three apiece) and Luca Cagianesa, Justin Glenn and Brandon Harris (two apiece).
In other boys games this past Thursday, IAC (Interstate Athletic Conference) power Landon School knocked off the Saints of St. Stephens/St. Agnes, 65-58.
The Red, White and Green Saints trailed 34-26 at halftime and then narrowly outscored the Bears 32-31 over the game's final 16 minutes. The Saints were paced by Dexter Lindsey's 23 points and subsequently dropped to 9-9 overall/3-5 IAC.
In addition, Mount Vernon defeated JEB Stuart 64-57 to maintain a solid second place perch behind powerhouse Hayfield in the National District.
The Majors led 42-33 at intermission and despite being outscored by the Raiders 24-22 over the games final 16 minutes - Mount Vernon did what was required to post another victory and improve to 15-3 overall/10-1 National (their lone loss is to the Hawks). The Majors were paced by Skylar Jones's 22 points.
In girls action: powerhouse Edison of the National District pounded District foe Falls Church 93-22 to improve to 17-1 overall/11-0 National. The Lady Eagles led 46-10 at intermission enroute to the decisive win.
Mount Vernon, second in the National District standings behind Edison, pummelled JEB Stuart 78-21 to improve to 12-5 overall/9-2 National. The Lady Majors led 40-12 at halftime enroute to the decisive win.
Hayfield, third in the National District standings, got a solid 53-34 win versus District rival Wakefield to improve to 10-9 overall/7-4 National. The Lady Hawks led 25-18 at intermission and then outscored the Lady Warriors 28-16 over the games final 16 minutes. The Warriors dropped to 6-13 overall/3-8 National.
Regarding the Patriot District, the Lady Atoms of Annandale held off District rival W.T. Woodson 43-42 to improve to 12-6 overall/8-3 Patriot. The Red and White trailed 26-21 at intermission; nonetheless Annandale outscored the Lady Cavaliers 22-16 over the games final 16 minutes to prevail.
Regarding the Liberty District, the Lady Colonials of Jefferson dropped a 52-28 contest to Langley. With the loss, Jefferson dropped to 3-13 overall/1-8 Liberty.
Regarding the Independent School League (ISL), the Lady Saints of St. Stephens/St. Agnes dropped a 48-28 contest to league foe Maret. The Saints trailed badly at half - namely 31-14. The Red, White and Green merely lost the second half 17-14 enroute to the 20-point loss. With the setback, the Saints dropped to 2-11 overall/0-6 ISL.
Regarding the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC), the Lady Cardinals of Ireton dropped a 68-32 contest to league foe Good Counsel. The Cardinal and Gold trailed 33-13 at intermission and consequently were outscored 35-19 in the second half.
With the loss, Ireton dropped to 8-15 overall/0-13 WCAC. The Cardinals are coached by Mike Hutton, who will have to work miracles in February if the Cardinals are to qualify for the upcoming Virginia State Independent Tournament.
