ALEXANDRIA, VA. - Episcopal alumnus Danny Coale (class of '07) will be a key cog in the Virginia Tech offensive machine as the Hokies tangle with SEC power Tennessee in the December 31st "Chick-fil-A" Bowl in Atlanta, Ga.
The 6'0, 205-pound Coale has had a number of big games at wide receiver this season for the Orange and Maroon.
The redshirt sophomore has nearly 30 catches on the season and his late game grab versus Nebraska propelled the Hokies to that particular win back in the month of September.
In December, versus arch-rival Virginia, Coale hauled in six catches for nearly 100 yards as the Hokies defeated the Wahoos in what turned out to be Al Groh's final game on the sidelines for Virginia.
At Episcopal, Coale was coached by longtime Maroon head coach Mark Gowin.
The 9-3 Hokies will attempt to win their 10th game of the season versus the 7-5 Volunteers.
During the current Holiday season most of the local high school basketball teams will be in action to one degree or another.
These include City schools T.C. Williams Titans, Ireton Cardinals and St. Stephens/St. Agnes Saints (boarding school Episcopal is on a rather long recess).
It also includes "inner" Alexandria-area schools: Edison Eagles, Hayfield Hawks, Jefferson Colonials, Mount Vernon Majors and West Potomac Wolverines as well as "outer" Alexandria-area schools: Annandale Atoms, Wakefield Warriors, Washington-Lee Generals and Yorktown Patriots.
In the Arizona Cardinals 31-24 win versus the Detroit Lions on December 20th, Episcopal grad Tim Hightower punched in a key one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter which propelled the Cardinals to a 17-0 halftime lead and the NFC West leading squad never looked back.
Hightower, Episcopal '04, had 38 all-purpose yards in the contest as Arizona (last seasons Super Bowl Runner-up) improved to 9-5 overall in the current season.
Hightower was also coached at EHS by decorated Mark Gowin and the 6-1 - 225 pound running back attended the University of Richmond before being drafted by Arizona in April '08.
The only other Alexandria-area player currently in the NFL as of this writing is Edison '95 grad Eric Barton - a linebacker for the Cleveland Browns.
