ALEXANDRIA, VA. - The St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School boys’ lacrosse team defended their state title winning the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association championship 7-6 against Norfolk Academy on May 20. The Saints will hang another VISAA State Championship banner in Goodwin Gymnasium.

The No. 5 seeded Saints had a grueling four-game schedule in one week to earn the championship plaque. After handling the No. 12 seed Bishop O’Connell Knights, 11-5 in their last game on Kelleher Field on May 13, the Saints found a winning rhythm in Richmond, where SSSAS took on Collegiate School on May 16. Looking to revenge a regular season loss to the Cougars, the Saints found themselves down 1 goal with 4 minutes left. SSSAS double-teamed the ball out of the timeout, forcing a turnover and scoring on a fast break tying 11-11. With 50 seconds remaining the Saints scored again taking the lead, earning a spot in the semifinals versus No. 1 seed Paul VI High School Panthers on May 19.

The Saints were up 4 goals against Paul VI in the middle of the third quarter before cracks of thunder sounded, delaying the game for over an hour. After holding off the fierce surge by the Panthers early in the fourth quarter, the Saints notched a 10-8 victory, earning their spot the following day in the championship game.
