Alexandria, Virginia - This past weekend will not go down in history as one of the most successful high school football weekends in recent memory.
Of the 14 area teams in Greater Alexandria, four came out victorious and 10 will look ahead to this upcoming weekend. There were three head to head matchups; consequently at least three teams had to come out with a win.
Bishop Ireton improved to 3-1 on the season with a rather impressive 19-7 win versus St. Stephens/St. Agnes. The game was scoreless after the first 12-minute quarter concluded.
The Cardinals led 12-0 at intermission, courtesy of a Doug Vines three-yard scoring run and a 46-yard TD pass from Oliver Noon to Vines. Neither team scored in the third quarter.
St. Stephens/St. Agnes narrowed their deficit to 12-7 in the fourth quarter when Alex Edwards scored from three yards out. Later in the fourth stanza, Ireton essentially put the game away when Kevin Galloway picked off an SSSA pass and returned it 51 yards for the game's final score.
T.C. Williams dropped to 2-2 overall via a hard-fought 35-26 setback to Lake Braddock.
In the Patriot District clash, Lake Braddock took an early 15-0 lead as the first quarter concluded. The Titans narrowed their deficit to 15-7 at intermission as John Bray connected with Israel Richardson on a 10-yard scoring strike. In the third quarter, the Titans narrowed their deficit to 15-13 when speedster Cortez Taylor ripped off a 69-yard punt return "to the house."

Lake Braddock eventually extended their lead to 28-13 as the third quarter concluded. The Titans hung tough and further narrowed their deficit to 28-20 and 28-26 via two consecutive scores (an 18-yard scoring strike from Doug Murphy to Rashid Conteh and a 22-yard scoring strike from Murphy to Bennie Jenkins).
Lake Braddock scored the games final TD to prevail in a hard-fought contest 35-26. T.C., the only public school in Alexandria, has now defeated Mount Vernon and Oakton, and has dropped rather narrow contests to both Robinson (Concorde District) and Lake Braddock.
Episcopal dropped to 1-1 on the season with a 13-6 setback to Fork Union. The Maroon spotted Fork Union an early 7-0 lead and that is where the game stood at the conclusion of the first quarter. Episcopal did not find the endzone all game long, but the Maroons Connor Gallegos successfully booted a 42-yard second quarter field goal as well as a 30-yard third quarter field goal.
The latter took place after Fork Union had gone ahead 13-3 and the Maroon will regroup after their seven point loss. (In game one of the season, Episcopal thoroughly dominated Flint Hill). However, after two contests, the Maroon now weighs-in at .500
In the Fairfax County section of Alexandria, Hayfield improved to 4-0 overall with a solid 27-19 victory versus National District rival Yorktown. The Hawks took an early 14-0 lead after the first quarter was in the proverbial books.
Hayfield led 20-6 at intermission, before Yorktown roared back to merely trail 20-19 in the third. The Hawks put the only fourth quarter points on the board to win by eight. Hayfield was paced offensively by: Anton McCallum (a one-yard scoring run as well as a three-yard TD strike to Nazrul Islam) and also by Rayshawn Rigans: a 60-yard and a 31-yard scoring run. In addition, sophomore running back Steve Lynch ran hard for the Hawks and junior linebacker Justin Marshall made some key plays on defense.
Edison improved to 3-1 on the season via an impressive 48-13 win versus National District rival Wakefield. The Eagles scored early and often and led 28-6 at intermission.
Edison extended their lead to 48-6 as the third quarter concluded. On the night, the Eagles put six offensive TD's on the board: three from Angus Harper, two from Chris Washington and one from Greg Smith.
Edison was the Northern Region Division V Runners-ups last season as they lost to powerhouse Stonebridge in the title game.
Annandale dropped to 3-1 overall with a 27-14 loss to Concorde District member Oakton. The Patriot District member Atoms spotted Oakton the first 21 points of the game - all in the first quarter. Annandale closed their deficit to 21-7 at intermission via a 74-yard TD from Ricky Adams to Melvin Robinson. The Atoms narrowed their deficit to 21-14 in the third quarter via another Adams to Robinson TD strike (this one from 18 yards out). Oakton, however, scored the lone fourth quarter points to pull away 27-14.
West Potomac dropped to 1-3 on the season via a disheartening 38-28 setback to West Springfield. The Wolverines spotted West Springfield a 21-7 lead as the first quarter concluded. West Potomac, however, roared back and took a 28-21 lead at intermission. Unfortunately for "WP", the Spartans of West Springfield outscored them 17-0 in the games final 24 minutes to prevail. (Exact scoring details for West Potomac were unavailable).
Both Jefferson and Mount Vernon dropped to 0-4 overall. The Colonials were blistered by powerhouse Stonebridge 56-0; whereas the Majors were edged by JEB Stuart 19-17. Regarding the Jefferson effort - there is not much to report about. Regarding the Mount Vernon effort - the Majors trailed 13-10 at halftime. Even though Mount Vernon outscored Stuart 7-6 over the games final 24 minutes, it turned out to be too little too late. Scoring TD's for Mount Vernon: Tre' Cooke and Andrew Sable.
In Arlington, Washington-Lee improved to 1-3 on the season via a 23-19 win versus Falls Church. In the National District matchup, the Jaguars of Falls Church led the Generals of Washington-Lee 19-17 late in the contest. In a dramatic conclusion to the contest, the Generals put the games final touchdown on the board to prevail 23-19. (Exact scoring details were unavailable).
In an interesting note, the game honored the 1969 W-L football team that suited up in pads 40 seasons ago. One member in attendance included Reggie Harrison - a bruising runner who played collegiately at University of Cincinnatti and then later played on the Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl Teams of the 1970's. One other notable former player in attendance, amongst others, was his youth running mate Steve Rogers.
O'Connell dropped to 3-1 overall as the Knights were stopped 35-8 by Good Counsel (the #2 ranked team in the entire area by the Washington Post). O'Connell trailed 7-0 and 21-0 after the first two quarters respectively. The Knights also trailed 35-0 at the conclusion of the third quarter. O'Connell senior running back Greg Gadell accounted for all eight O'Connell points in the fourth quarter: an eight-yard scoring run and a successful two-point conversion run.
Yorktown dropped to 1-3 on the season via a tough 27-19 loss to Hayfield. The Patriots trailed 20-6 at intermission. Yorktown, from North Arlington, put 13 points on the scoreboard in the third quarter - to merely trail 20-19 heading into the fourth.
To Yorktown's chagrin, they would score no additional points and dropped the contest to the newest member of the National District. Scoring TD's for the Patriots: senior QB Sam Nottingham - a 13-yard run, as well as two aerial scores from the senior - one to C.J. Bartholomew (a 31-yarder) and one to Mike Veith (a 29-yarder).
Wakefield dropped to 0-4 overall as the Warriors were convincingly defeated by Edison 48-13. Wakefield, from South Arlington, scored their two offensive TD's courtesy of head coach Keith Powell's nephew. Drew Powell, only a sophomore, connected with Aaron Hunt on a second quarter 24-yard scoring strike and then he ran for a two-yard fourth quarter score.
