Alexandria, Virginia - Whereas last week I reported that only four of 14 area teams posted football wins, this most recent weekend six of the 14 area high schools posted football victories.
In ALEXANDRIA CITY: Ireton, coached by Tony Verducci, improved to 4-1 with a 28-0 win versus Bullis (Md.). St. Stephens/St. Agnes, coached by Dave Holm, improved to 3-1 with a 49-6 victory versus Randolph Macon Academy (Front Royal). T.C. Williams, coached by Dennis Randolph, dropped to 2-3 with a narrow 15-14 setback to West Springfield. Episcopal, coached by Mark Gowin, dropped to 1-2 with a 23-7 loss to Collegiate (Richmond).
In ALEXANDRIA-AREA/FAIRFAX COUNTY: Edison, coached by Vaughn Lewis, improved to 4-1 with an 18-14 victory versus Oakton. (Alphabetically) Annandale, coached by Dick Adams, dropped to 3-2 with a 33-23 loss to R.E. Lee. Hayfield, coached by Billy Pugh, dropped to 3-2 with a 49-14 loss to Chantilly. [Last weeks edition incorrectly identified the Hawks at 4-0; whereas they should have been listed at 3-1 - via a very narrow week two loss to R.E. Lee]. Jefferson, coached by Tim Puvogel, dropped to 0-5 with a 7-0 setback to Washington-Lee. Mount Vernon, coached by Tom Glynn, dropped to 0-5 with a 50-21 loss to Centreville. West Potomac, coached by Eric Henderson, dropped to 1-4 with a 23-7 setback to South County.
In ARLINGTON COUNTY: O'Connell, coached by Steve Trimble, improved to 4-1 with a 23-8 victory versus Carroll (D.C.). Washington-Lee, coached by Josh Shapiro, improved to 2-3, with the aforementioned 7-0 win versus Jefferson. Yorktown, coached by Bruce Hanson, improved to 2-3 with a 53-21 win versus Falls Church. Finally, Wakefield, coached by Keith Powell, dropped to 0-5 with a 47-13 loss to JEB Stuart.
MORE SPECIFICALLY IN THE WINNERS COLUMN: Bishop Ireton (Cambridge Road) road their opportunistic defense in large measure in knocking off visiting Bullis of the Interstate Athletic Conference. The Cardinals scored 21 second quarter points enroute to the victory. Senior Doug Vines accounted for two of the Ireton scores with a nine-yard TD reception from QB Mike Larrabee as well as with a five-yard scamper.
St. Stephens/St. Agnes (St. Stephens Lane) visited Front Royal and simply beat the home team in every facet of the contest. The Saints put 14 points on the scoreboard in the first quarter and put 21 points on the scoreboard in the second quarter enroute to the decisive victory. Six different Saints accounted for the seven TD's - including two from both Jalani Winbush (runs of 80 and 33 yards) and from Dave Solomon (a 31-yard interception return and a five-yard run).
Edison (Franconia Road) trailed 7-0 after the conclusion of the first quarter and also trailed the Cougars 14-3 at halftime. The game remained 14-3 as the third quarter wound down as well. In the decisive fourth quarter, the Eagles of Edison put 15 points on the board to prevail. In the final 12-minute frame: Jerrell Haywood took a 29-yard interception return to the house and Angus Harper caught a 54-yard scoring strike from QB Levi Barber. In addition, Barber added a two-point conversion with his legs and Bill Arnez added a PAT kick.
Bishop O'Connell (Little Falls Road) scored in the opening and in the final quarters to prevail against one of their WCAC rivals. The Knights put 10 points on the board in the first quarter and led 10-0 at halftime as well as 10-8 at the conclusion of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, O'Connell generated two insurance touchdowns - both from William Conner (a 36-yard run and a one-yard run).
Washington-Lee (N.Quincy Street) kept Thomas Jefferson out of the endzone all night long. On the other hand, the Generals scored their lone touchdown of the contest in the opening quarter when Anthony Taylor ripped off a 66-yard scoring run. After starting the season 0-3, W-L has now won their past two contests.
Yorktown (Yorktown Blvd.) was too much for the Jaguars of Falls Church. The Patriots led 14-7 after the opening quarter and led 21-14 at intermission. At the conclusion of the third quarter, Yorktown also led 33-21 - before exploding for 20 fourth quarter points. Six different Patriots accounted for the eight TD's including two from Eric Cardillo (a five and a six-yard run) and two from C.J. Bartholomew (a 16-yard reception from QB Sam Nottingham as well as a 20-yard interception return).
