The upcoming school year doesn't appear to be on the immediate horizon, but believe it or not the high school golf season will be underway in approximately eight weeks.

Golf practice will begin in early/mid August and matches will commence in mid/late August. It is always the earliest sport to begin the academic school year. The acquisition of times at golf courses are difficult scheduling-wise.

The new Northern Region District realignment will be as follows:

PATRIOT

T.C. Williams, West Potomac, Annandale, Lake Braddock, R.E. Lee, South County, West Springfield and W.T. Woodson.

NATIONAL

Edison, Hayfield, Mount Vernon, Falls Church, JEB Stuart, Wakefield, Washington-Lee and Yorktown.

LIBERTY

Jefferson, Fairfax, Langley, Madison, Marshall, McLean, South Lakes and Stonebridge.

CONCORDE

Centreville, Chantilly, Herndon, Oakton, Robinson and Westfield.

Boys Summer basketball

The prestigious St. Stephens/St. Agnes boys summer basketball league is in full swing in Alexandria.

Twelve teams are competing for the title which will be decided in late July.

The four local teams include the St. Stephens/St. Agnes Saints, the Edison Eagles, the Hayfield Hawks and to some degree the Annandale Atoms (several Annandale players are from the Lincolnia/Alexandria section of the county).

League Director Kevin McLinton (the SSSA head coach) is pleased with the purpose of the league: "It's to help the younger players get familiar with their teammates and to be able to develop their skills prior to the start of the next school season."

Michael Schwimmer: pro Baseball player

St. Stephens/St. Agnes alumnus Michael Schwimmer is one of the few residents of Northern Virginia playing professional baseball.

The '04 Saint alumnus is having an excellent season in "high-A" professional baseball in Clearwater, Fl.

Schwimmer's ERA is an outstanding 1.95 for his Florida squad.

Schwimmer, who pitched collegiately at the University of Virginia, is in his second season of organized pro ball after graduating from UVA in May of '08.

He is a middle inning reliever for Clearwater.
