ARLINGTON, VA. -- Nearly 21,000 runners crossed the start line at Sunday’s Marine Corps Marathon.
The 26.2 mile race took participants on a journey through the streets of Arlington and Washington, DC culminating with a finish at the Marine Corps War Memorial.
The first finisher to cross the line was John Mentzer, 33, of Kittery, Maine with a time of 2:21:47. He was followed by Jacob Johnson, 32, of Sherwood, Ariz., in 2:25:02 and Salvador Miranda, 38, of Mexico with a time of 2:25:24. The top female finisher was Ethiopian Muliye Gurmu, 25, with a time of 2:49:48. Jaymee Marty, 42, of Sacromento, Calif., was the second female finisher in 2:50:15. Rounding out the top three was Kyla Barbour, 31, of Atlanta, Ga., in 2:50:47.
Wyatt Boyd, 25, of Washington, DC was the winner of the ALL NEW MCM10K with a time of 32:54. He was followed by James Smith, 26, of Alexandria, Va., in 32:58 and Mathew Bierlein, 24, of Blacksburg, Va., in 33:10.
The top female MCM10K finishers were Kim Magee, 26, of Bloomington, Minn., in 39:20, Rebecca Durivage-Jacobs, 25, of Baltimore, Md., in 40:12 and Cristina Burbach, 35, of Washington, DC in 42:03.
The Royal Navy/Marines won the annual Challenge Cup competition, beating the USMC with a combined time of 8:01:17. The USMC team time was 8:03:47. The United States Air Force team won the Armed Forces Marathon competition with a team time of 15:40:49.
