ALEXANDRIA, VA. -
Virginia State Police said Tuesday they continue to investigate Sunday's police-involved shooting in Alexandria. State police are leading the investigation per Alexandria Police policy.

The suspect shot by an Alexandria officer has not been identified but is a 28-year-old man. He has no fixed address but regularly is in Alexandria and Prince Georges County, Md. The suspect remains at DC's George Washington University Hospital in serious but non-life-threatening condition.

The agency said in a news release it "continues to pursue leads and examining evidence related to the shooting of a 28-year-old male by an Alexandria Police Officer." Police have recovered the suspect's gun from the scene.

Around 4:21 p.m., Alexandria Police responded to calls about shots fired in the neighborhood. The officer encountered the armed suspect in the 900 block of N. Patrick Street, police say.

The suspect was shot and injured. Alexandria Police told The Washington Post the suspect pointed the gun at the officer and wouldn't put it down.
