WASHINGTON -
A 17-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection to a shooting that seriously injured three people in the Del Ray neighborhood Thursday afternoon.

The suspect’s name will not be released because the suspect is a minor, Alexandria police say. But police say the suspect is an Alexandria City resident who has been charged with malicious wounding.

Police say three adults were shot in the 400 block of East Howell Avenue around 12:45 p.m. The three victims have non-life-threatening injuries and are in stable but serious condition, said police spokeswoman Captain Shannon Soriano.

Later Thursday, police say the victims were a 19-year-old woman, a 21-year-old man and a 49-year-old man.

Police also say their initial investigation reveals that the suspect shot at a vehicle traveling on East Howell Avenue. Three people were inside the vehicle and it crashed after it was shot at.

The scene of the shooting is a few blocks from Eugene Simpson Park, where a gunman opened fire during a Congressional baseball game practice last month.

Police were searching for the suspect with the help of a helicopter in the area and asked for residents to stay away from the scene.

Police said the victims and the shooter knew each other and they don’t know what prompted the shooting. They have not released any additional details about the shooting at this time, including the identities of the victims.
