ALEXANDRIA, VA. — One resident was found dead when a fire broke out in Old Town Alexandria early Wednesday.

The Alexandria Fire Department responded to the 300 block of South Pitt Street around 12:34 a.m. Units found fire coming from the second floor of the townhouse and rescued a man. Firefighters found another resident dead in the home.

NBC Washington reported the victim was an elderly woman. The other resident, her husband, went to the hospital. Firefighters also rescued a dog and cat from the home.

Investigators say the cause was an electrical cord in contact with a mattress and other combustibles. Damages are estimated to be $150,000.
