ROSE HILL, VA. — Firefighters rescued a child when a fire broke out at a Rose Hill home early Saturday, Feb. 2.

Around 1:08 a.m., Fairfax County and Alexandria crews responded to the 6300 block of Telegraph Road. Firefighters found the blaze on the side of the two-story home. Crews began tackling the fire and conducted a search.

Two residents had been home when the fire occurred. One resident heard a popping noise coming from the kitchen and escaped before help arrived. Firefighters found the 11-year-old girl screaming behind a closed bedroom door on the first floor. She was carried out uninjured. No other injuries were reported.

Fire investigators determined improperly discarded cigarettes in the trash caused the fire in the kitchen. Smoke alarms were working and activated.

Two adults and two children were displaced and have accepted Red Cross assistance. The fire department says the initial damage estimate is $93,750.
