Join members of the French Wine Society and Club BV* for French vs. New World at the Historic Occidental Grill. The pairing is an eclectic mix of French varietals and their new world comparisons. Enjoy one of winter’s best pastimes throughout March at the Sculpture Garden. Grab your friends, scarf and gloves and be ready to take the rink seven days of the week. Admission is good for a two-hour session beginning on the hour, and is $6 or $7. Skate rental is just $3 to catch up on an activity that is good for the young and young at heart. Sculpture Garden hours Monday through Thursday are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The beautiful rink is located on the National Mall at 7th Street and Constitution Avenue NW. Open life drawing continues at the Del Ray Artisans gallery. These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. We don't supply easels - only plenty of chairs - but you are welcome to bring your own if you want to use one. Gesture Sessions (two hours) Come to the gesture sessions to loosen up and participate in a fun, fast-paced drawing experience. These two-hour sessions are composed primarily of series of dynamic 1-5 minute poses. One or two favorite poses may be revisited for 10-15 minutes at the end of each session. Short/Long Pose Sessions (three hours) The three-hour short/long pose sessions start with some short 5 minute warm-up poses and progressively move into longer poses lasting 10-45 minutes. These sessions provide a great opportunity to hone your drawing and observation skills. Long Pose Sessions (two- or three hour sessions) For people wanting to spend an extended amount of time on a pose, come to our long pose sessions. Poses will be at least one hour long and may extend for the full length of the session. The fee for each three-hour session is $8 for DRA members and $10 for non-members. Project Discovery, a college preparatory program for City youth, is recruiting volunteers to assist students with the Discovery Garden, an educational organic vegetable garden at Chinquapin Gardens adjacent to T.C. Williams High School, 3330 King St. Every Wednesday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m., students hold a Garden Party where they plant, pick, prepare and eat something from the garden. Experienced gardeners are invited to join in the activities and offer tips for successful growing. The community garden offers educational and cultural programs that are open to the public throughout the summer. In the fall, the garden will be used to provide hands-on learning to students in biology, culinary arts, and other subjects. All excess produce is donated to the local food bank as part of "Plant a Row for the Hungry," an initiative that encourages people to grow produce for needy persons in the community. Project Discovery also needs volunteers to water the garden during the weekends. Donations of garden equipment are also welcome. Project Discovery is a college access program operated by the Department of Human Services at T.C. Williams and Minnie Howard schools for low-income and/or first-generation college-eligible students.
