Chess (Entertaiment & Music)
08-10-2010 - 09-23-2010      01:00 PM

Signature Theatre
4200 Campbell Dr.
Arlington , Virginia 22206

The world of Cold War intrigue, forbidden love, and 1980s rock rules when the legendary musical Chess , by the composers of Mamma Mia!, plays Signature Theatre, August 10 through September 26. The first major American production in almost 20 years—and the Washington region’s very first professional production—stars Broadway’s Jill Paice (Curtains), Euan Morton (Boy George in Taboo), and Jeremy Kushnier (Footloose) in the Russian/American conflict made new again. Director Eric Schaeffer (Broadway’s Million Dollar Quartet) and his creative team capture the gritty, sexy world of Chess’ 1985 radio hit ‘One Night in Bangkok’ in the amazing intimacy of Signature’s 276-seat MAXTheatre. The Tony Award®-winning Signature Theatre has a national reputation for its work with musicals – polishing underappreciated gems, as well as producing world premieres and reinventing classics.

Chess: two international chess masters—one American, one Russian—compete for the world championship only to find that their greatest contest is for the love of the same woman. Amidst political intrigue and international conspiracies, Freddie and Anatoly fight to take the queen in a romantic triangle that mirrors the heightened passions of the Cold War. Originally produced on Broadway in 1988, this Tony-nominated rock musical explores the classic themes of love, loss and betrayal. In addition to ‘One Night in Bangkok,’ Chess features unforgettable songs as such ‘Anthem,’ ‘I Know Him So Well,’ ‘Nobody’s Side,’ and ‘Pity the Child.’ Time Magazine called it “one of the best rock scores ever produced in the theater.”

Chess performances run from August 10 through September 26, 2010.

Show times are Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:30 pm, Thursday and Friday at 8:00 pm, Saturday at 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm, and Sunday at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm. There are no performances of Chess on Saturday, August 14 at 2:00 pm and Tuesday, August 17 at 7:30 pm.

Alexandria Black History Museum Offering "Movies with a Mission" (Entertaiment & Music)
05-08-2010 - 12-11-2010      04:30 PM

The Alexandria Black History Museum
902 Wythe Street
Alexandria , Virginia 22314

Free Monthly Film Screenings Through Year’s End

The Alexandria Black History Museum is continuing its partnership with SankofaSpirit to share its “Movies with a Mission” with Washington, D.C., area audiences. This monthly series, which began last fall, has been extended through the end of this year. The screenings are held at 4:30 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month through Saturday, December 11, at the museum, 902 Wythe Street.

“Movies with a Mission” are free monthly films from and about Africa and the African Diaspora that seek to inform and inspire dialogue. Screenings will be followed by a discussion and gallery walk. Reservations are requested, as seating is limited. For more information or to make a reservation, please call 703.746.4356. The following films will be offered:

May 8 – “Rain in a Dry Land”

How do you measure the distance from an African village to an American city? What does it mean to be a refugee in today’s global village? “Rain in a Dry Land” provides eye-opening answers as it chronicles the fortunes of two Somali Bantu families, transported by relief agencies from years of civil war and refugee life to Springfield, Massachusetts, and Atlanta, Georgia. As the newcomers confront racism, poverty and 21st-century culture shock, the film captures their efforts to survive in America and create a safe haven for their war-torn families. Their poetry, humor and amazing resilience show us our own world through new eyes. (83 min.)

June 12 – “New Muslim Cool”

Puerto Rican American rapper Hamza Pérez ended his life as a drug dealer 12 years ago, and started down a new path as a young Muslim. Now he’s moved to Pittsburgh’s tough North Side to start a new religious community, rebuild his shattered family, and take his message of faith to other young people through his uncompromising music as part of the hip-hop duo M-Team. But when the FBI raids his mosque, Hamza must confront the realities of the post-9/11 world, and challenge himself. He starts reaching for a deeper understanding of his faith, discovering new connections with people from Christian and Jewish communities. Follow Hamza’s spiritual journey to some surprising places where we can all see ourselves reflected in a world that never stops changing. (60 min.)

July 10 – “Harlem’s Mart 125: The American Dream”

Explore the history of Mart 125 and learn how it correlates to the “revitalization” of 125th Street, Harlem’s main commercial sector. Viewers will take a historical journey with the economic transition of 125th Street from the late 1960s to the present day, examining issues like urban renewal from a commercial standpoint. This is a story that takes an introspective look at the changing face of the most well-known African-American neighborhood and a complexity of issues that surround this community in peril. (68 min.)

August 14 –“Faubourg Tremé: The Untold Story of Black New Orleans”

“Faubourg Tremé” was largely shot before the Katrina tragedy but edited afterward, giving the film both a celebratory and elegiac tone. It is a film of such effortless intimacy, subtle glances and authentic details that only native New Orleanians could have made it. Our guide through the neighborhood is New Orleans Time-Picayune reporter Lolis Eric Elie, who decided that, rather than abandon his heritage, he would invest in it by rehabilitating an old house in the Tremé district. His contractor, Irving Trevigne, whose family has been in the construction business there for more than 200 years, becomes a symbol of the neighborhood’s continuity and resourcefulness and is deeply rooted in his community and its traditions. (67 min.)

September 11 – “Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai”

Planting trees for fuel, shade, and food is not something that anyone would imagine as the first step toward winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Yet with that simple act, Wangari Maathai, a woman born in rural Kenya, started down the path that reclaimed her country’s land from 100 years of deforestation, provided new sources of food and income to rural communities, gave previously impoverished and powerless women a vital political role in their country, and ultimately helped to bring down Kenya’s 24-year dictatorship. “Taking Root” tells the dramatic story of the woman whose simple act of planting trees grew into a nationwide movement for which this charismatic woman became an iconic inspiration. (54 min.)

October 9 – “From Barbados to Carolina: The Colony of a Colony”

“From Barbados to Carolina” explores the connections between colonial South Carolina and the island of Barbados in the British West Indies. It presents a detailed look at the heritage and culture of both early Charleston plantation owners and African slaves of Barbadian ancestry. (60 min.)

November 13 – “The Principal Story” Film Screening

“The Principal Story” tells two stories, painting a dramatic portrait of the challenges facing America's public schools and of the great difference a dedicated principal can make. Tresa Dunbar is a second-year principal at Chicago’s Nash Elementary, where 98% of students come from low-income families; in Springfield, Illinois, Kerry Purcell has led Harvard Park Elementary, with similar demographics, for six years. The filmmakers followed both women over the course of a school year, discovering each one’s unique styles yet similar passions. “The Principal Story” takes the viewer along for an emotional ride that reveals what effective educational leadership looks like in the 21st century. (52 min.)

December 11 – “The Black Candle: A Kwanzaa Celebration”

This landmark, vibrant documentary from M.K. Asante uses Kwanzaa as a vehicle to explore and celebrate the African American experience. Filmed across the United States, Africa, Europe and the Caribbean, “The Black Candle” is a timely illumination on why the seven principles of Kwanzaa are so important to African-Americans today. Narrated by Maya Angelou, it traces the holiday's growth out of the Black Power Movement in the 1960s to its present-day reality as a global, pan-African holiday embraced by over 40 million celebrants. (71 min.)

Founded in 2002, Atlanta-based SankofaSpirit is dedicated to providing cultural and educational programs and services that focus on Africa and the African Diaspora. Through its programs and services, SankofaSpirit encourages people of African descent to reconnect with their great legacy. For more information, please visit www.sankofaspirit.com.

The Alexandria Black History Museum is located at 902 Wythe Street in the heart of the Parker-Gray Historic District and is open from Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. To learn more about the museum and Alexandria’s rich African-American heritage, please visit www.alexblackhistory.org.

The Not-So-Modern Jazz Quartet Plus is a combo playing in the club venue of the 20s, 30s and 40s. It faithfully reproduces this music with top local jazz musicians. The basic quartet is made up of clarinet, bass, piano and drums. When a piano is unavailable, the quartet substitutes a rhythm guitar. We often play with five or more musicians, particularly when playing Dixieland, hence the "plus" in the name of the band. The musicians rely heavily on their improvisation skills, and the band has a very large book of old standards, traditional Dixieland and Swing Era tunes. The music of Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and Fats Waller are centerpieces of the combo's repertoire. We play regularly at St. Elmo's Coffee Pub, and the Westlawn Inn. We are available for other regular gigs and scheduled affairs such as parties, weddings, dances and public events. Betsy Riddle Ruderfer sings ballads with us at the Westlawn Inn and other gigs. Herb Greenlee who comes down from Waynesboro in Pennsylvania has a regular weekend solo piano gig in Hagerstown Maryland and plays with us when he can, hence two versions of the quartet. Mort Langstaff plays the remaining times. We are glad to have both of them.
