ASK MERRILY/Merrily Preston - CONCERNED FRIEND
Nov 10,2008

I have a friend, in her mid-fifties. She is the mother of two boys, 20 and 23. She is making herself and her family very unhappy because, I think, she cannot let the boys grow up. She cannot sleep if they are out late. She still thinks she should take them to the dentist, doctor, etc.

ASK MERRILY/Merrily Preston - FUNERAL
Oct 31,2008

My husband and I are scheduled to go on a once-in-a-lifetime all-expenses-paid trip to London. My 87-year old grandfather is in failing health and has weeks to live. What should I do if my grandfather passes while I am overseas? Should I come back for the funeral? My husband would not be able to come back early with me. Or, should I "say my goodbyes" before I leave?

ASK MERRILY/Merrily Preston - Mom's Care and Estate
Oct 20,2008

Mother became ill a few years ago and put my brother (B1) in charge of her estate and care. My brother (B2) and I are upset because his focus is saving money and preserving the estate. Our focus is the best possible care for her. The problem is that we have NO say in the matter since B1 is in charge. He takes our suggestions as attacks on his judgment.

I have a good friend Emily who wants to carpool to choir rehearsal 20 miles away. But when I ride with her I get carsick because she pulses with her accelerator foot, fast/slow, fast/slow. She is beginning to wonder why I am never available to ride with her. How do I explain to her?

ASK MERRILY/Merrily Preston - MY 19 YEAR OLD
Oct 14,2008

My 19 year old was wonderful all through K-12. He never got in trouble, he got good grades, he was popular. But for the year since he graduated, he sits around the house explaining why no one will hire him for a job he would want and why he doesn’t have to do chores and how he needs a ride someplace.

ASK MERRILY/Merrily Preston - WEDDING ETIQUETTE
Oct 14,2008

Friends of ours are planning a secluded wedding at the beach. They have both been married before. They are keeping the wedding low key---so low key that they haven't invited any of their friends. A mutual friend wants to give them a celebration so we've all been invited to a restaurant, at our own expense.

ASK MERRILY/Merrily Preston - TANTRUMS
Oct 08,2008

Dear Merrily, How do I teach my five-year-old son to take responsibility for himself? Too often he says he had a temper tantrum because his father or I "made" him do it by not giving him what he wants.

ASK MERRILY/Merrily Preston - NEW CAREER for MOM
Sep 29,2008

Dear Merrily, I want to start a new career. In order to do this, I need a lot of time and energy for writing and thinking and being creative. My problem is that I've allowed my daughter to take up all my time and most of my energy. She'll be a senior in the Fall and with college applications and driving her everywhere etc.
