ALEXANDRIA, VA. - The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria celebrated its 70th anniversary on Sunday June 12, with a cruise on the Cherry Blossom.

A reception for members of the Vola Lawson Leadership Society on the cruise. The first annual Vola Lawson Award was given to to Ellen Flynn, who has served the AWLA as a volunteer for 45 years. She has helped socialize and adopt out hundreds of dogs over decades of service beginning in 1971. The celebration included a visual history of AWLA.

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria is an independent, local, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Operating the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter, an open-admission facility and Alexandria’s only animal shelter.
