ALEXANDRIA, VA. - The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria has been helping even more animals than usual at its shelter at 4101 Eisenhower Avenue. To make room for animals that continue to arrive during the busy summer season, AWLA is asking the public to consider adopting this weekend.

AWLA is a proud supporter to other shelters in the area and often jumps in when they request assistance. For example, AWLA recently took in 16 cats when asked by Stafford County Animal Services for emergency assistance with a hoarding situation involving 80 animals. Many of these cats are now healthy after treatment by AWLA and will be available for adoption this weekend.

AWLA's dog runs, cat rooms and other animal areas are at capacity so staff has created makeshift accommodations for animals in staff offices, meeting areas, and the shelter's education room has even been turned into a “kitty classroom," to house some of the previously -hoarded cats.
