What's Open, Closed For Veterans Day 2018 In Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA, VA. - This year Veterans Day falls on Sunday, Nov. 11, but the holiday honoring military veterans will be observed the next day (Monday, Nov. 12) in Alexandria.

While city offices will remain open on Monday, schools and a few other services will be closed. Alexandria residents should also know there won't be Metro service between Braddock Road and Pentagon City from Nov. 9 to Nov. 12.

Here are the Alexandria openings and closings to be aware of on Nov. 12:

City Offices: Open

Alexandria City Public Schools: Closed on Nov. 12.

State Offices: The Circuit Court, Clerk of Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, and Court Service Unit located in the Alexandria Courthouse at 520 King Street will be closed on Nov. 12. The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office at 2681 Mill Road will also be closed.

Animal Shelter: The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter will observe weekend hours, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Nov. 12. Animal visiting hours will begin at noon from Nov. 10-12. Adoption fees on adult animals will be waived for veterans and activity-duty military personnel.

DASH Bus: DASH bus service will operate on its regular Sunday schedule on Nov. 11 and regular weekday schedule on Nov. 12. The free King Street Trolley will operate on its normal schedule, every 10-15 minutes between the King Street Metro Station and the Potomac River waterfront, from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Nov. 11 and 12. Health Facilities:
The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King St.), Flora Krause Casey Wellness Center (1200 N. Howard St.) and Teen Wellness Center at T.C. Williams High School (3330 King St.) will be closed on Nov. 12.

Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703-746-5800; the domestic violence hotline at 703-746-4911; the emergency services for mental health or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the adult protective services hotline at 1-888-832-3858; and the sexual assault hotline at 703-683-7273.

The Alexandria Law Library (520 King St.) will be closed on Nov. 12. All other Alexandria Library branches and the Talking Books Service at Beatley Central Library will be open.

Metrorail: Blue and Yellow Line will not operate between Braddock Road and Pentagon City stations over Veterans Day weekend (Friday, Nov. 9 to Monday, Nov. 12). Reagan National Airport and Crystal City stations will be closed. Free shuttle bus service will operate between Braddock Road, National Airport, Crystal City and Pentagon City stations for the duration of the work. Click here for more information.

Museums: The Alexandria History Museum at the Lyceum will be open on a regular schedule from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Nov. 12. All other City museums will be closed. For more information, visit

The Alexandria Police Department will enforce all normal parking regulations on Sunday, Nov. 11, and will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces and residential permit parking districts on Monday, Nov. 12. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces, and does not permit parking in any location normally prohibited (for example, no parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no parking signs will be enforced on Nov. 12.

Recreation and Art Centers:
All City recreation and art centers will be open on a regular schedule on Nov. 12. Please check for hours.

Trash and Recycling: Residential refuse and recycling will be collected on a normal schedule the week of Nov. 12-16. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Center (3224 Colvin St.) is also open.
